UCL: Dortmund progress and will face Atletico Madrid in next round

Borussia Dortmund 2 - 1 PSV

(Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 on aggregate)

Borussia Dortmund made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in three years, thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus against PSV Eindhoven.

Dortmund fans atmosphere

Sancho fired in a powerful shot from the edge of the box early in the game to put Dortmund in the lead.

Despite another goal being disallowed due to offside, Reus capitalised on a mistake by PSV in stoppage time, securing the win with a one-on-one finish against PSV's goalkeeper, Walter Benitez.

More Champions League news

PSV had several chances to level the score, with Hirving Lozano missing opportunities. Peter Bosz's team, comfortably leading the Eredivisie, paid the price for their missed chances.

Lozano, who came on as a substitute, missed the target from close range and also failed to convert from distance.

PSV's best opportunity came just before Dortmund's late goal when Luuk de Jong missed from close range, symbolizing their frustrating exit from the Champions League.

Dortmund could have scored earlier when Ian Maatsen's powerful shot was saved by Benitez, but it was Sancho's early goal that set the tone, with Reus sealing the victory with his late strike after coming on as a substitute.

Sancho, who returned to Dortmund on loan in January, notched his first league goal since his return in a recent win over Werder Bremen. His goal equalled Tony Woodcock's record as the top English goalscorer in Bundesliga history.

Sancho was named Player of the Match but unfortunately left the field with an apparent hamstring injury in the 72nd minute, being replaced by Reus.

Dortmund will be hoping for a swift recovery for the youngster, who seems to be regaining the form he displayed in his earlier stint in Germany.

More of the best reaction to this match

Liam, a Manchester United fan, watched the match on TV. He told us: "PSV played well and deserved to have a chance at extra time or penalties, but their players' decision-making in the final third was poor. As a result, the game was frustrating to watch and not of the highest quality. Whoever draws the German team in the quarter-final will find encouragement in watching this game."

Before the draw for next round was made, Tomaz gave his thoughts on the potential opponents. He told us: "From Borussia Dortmund's perspective, the best result of the draw would be to face Atletico Madrid, who have been inconsistent recently, or Paris Saint-Germain, a team that BVB has previously defeated. However, it is unlikely that Borussia Dortmund will be considered favourites in the next round of the Champions League. It's worth noting that at this stage of the competition, anything can happen."

Tomaz must have been happy with this draw.
