UCL: United lose after chaotic night in Denmark

 FC Copenhagen 4 - 3 Manchester United

VAR stole the spotlight again

On a wild night in Copenhagen, fans witnessed seven goals, two spot-kicks, a game-altering red card, a protester causing a stir, and a thrilling last-minute winner courtesy of a 17-year-old substitute.

Amidst the chaos reminiscent of Monday's madness at Tottenham, video technology played a pivotal role in crucial decisions that impacted Manchester United's fate in the Champions League. Manager Erik ten Hag believed that VAR's intervention in dismissing Marcus Rashford for a challenge on Elias Jelert was a "game-changer," and it's tough to dispute that claim.

Referee Donatas Rumsas was summoned to the pitchside monitor twice more, awarding penalties to both sides for handballs, described as soft by most people.

Following these VAR-driven events, United's composure gave way to chaos, with Copenhagen drawing strength from a lively Parken Stadium to level the score. United entered halftime on shaky ground.

Erik ten Hag reorganized and refocused his team during the break, and for the next 25 minutes, they displayed excellence. Their defensive resilience, coupled with glimpses of threatening counter-attacks, kept Copenhagen cautious despite having an extra man. The turning point came after this period when United won a penalty, allowing Fernandes to restore their lead.

In stark contrast to United's 1-0 victory at Old Trafford two weeks ago, it was the Danish side celebrating jubilantly after a late surge.

With this result, they now sit second in the group, leaving Manchester United with a considerable task to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Best reaction

Liam, a Manchester United fan who went to Denmark for the match, told us: "Everything was going smoothly until the Rashford red card, and let's face it, that was just some rotten luck. But can we talk about Dalot? He's turning into a jynx again, and that's a bigger headache than whatever Ten Hag did. Those 20 minutes of brilliance from us were probably the highlight of the season, and even with 10 men, we were still running the show. It's seriously disheartening. The players fought like warriors and played their hearts out, and yet, not a single point to show for it. Frustrating, isn't it?"

@user-fs2iq1ei8p commented on the video attached above from Manchester United: "It has become a habit for us as a team to concede one goal and then concede another one. This isn't due to placement or suitability of players. It's something else."
