EFL: Wayne Rooney appointed Birmingham City manager

Birmingham City have announced the appointment of Wayne Rooney as their new manager.

The 37-year-old former England captain has joined the Championship club on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

He succeeds Blues head coach John Eustace, who was perhaps controversially sacked after 15 months in charge.

The new American owners of Blues, Shelby Companies Limited, have made their first managerial change by appointing the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker. They took over the club in July.

In his new role, Rooney will be supported by his former England team-mate Ashley Cole alongside his old United colleague John O'Shea, the assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland men's national team.

Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth will also be part of Rooney's backroom staff after both assisted him at DC United.

Wayne Rooney's managerial career will continue with his third job in management, following stints at the MLS club and Derby County. His first game as manager of Blues will be an away match against Middlesbrough on October 21st.

After retiring from playing, Rooney was appointed Derby manager in January 2021.

It is important to note that his time at Pride Park was marred by difficulties off the field. He saved them from relegation from the Championship by a single point four months after taking on the role.

During his first full season in charge in 2021-22, Derby were given a huge points deduction for being in administration and EFL breaches, alongside a transfer embargo. Derby were relegated to League One and Rooney left in June 2022 to move to DC United in the MLS.

All the best reaction from across the world

Paul Jones is a Birmingham City Season Ticket holder, he told us: "I must say, I thought the decision to sack our manager this week was awful However, I think Rooney will be a good option for us. There will be a different challenge for him, the timing of the managerial change suggests high expectations at St Andrew's and the sort of pressure he was more accustomed to during his playing career.  I definitely think he has the personality to thrive with us."

Jamie is actually a DC United fan who now lives in the United Kingdom. He told us: "Birmingham has someone who has great potential to be a superb manager. He did well at times for us, but you can tell that his heart always belonged in England,"
