EFL: Luton are one game from the Premier League

Luton Town 2 - 0 Sunderland (Luton won 2-0 on aggregate)

Luton booked their spot in the Championship play-off final after a fantastic 2-0 second-leg win saw them beat Sunderland 3-2 on aggregate.

You can watch the highlights in the video below.

Match report

Trailing 2-1 following the first game at the Stadium of Light, Luton turned their aerial threat into a reward as centre-backs Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer scored before the break.

Roared on by a raucous home support inside their Kenilworth Road home, Luton should have made it three when keeper Anthony Patterson misdirected a clearance, and Jordan Clark then blazed wastefully over.

More heroics from Luton Town

Luton Town are one win away from returning to the top flight of English football for the first time since 1992. They were relegated from the old first division in the season before the introduction of the Premier League.

Marvelous Nakamba tweeted: "A massive win and amazing atmosphere at Kenilworth Road. See you soon at Wembley."

After the match, the Luton boss spoke with great pride about the achievement. He was only appointed manager of the club in November 2022, and has clearly had a huge impact at the club. You can hear some of his thoughts in the video below.

One Luton fan told us: A remarkable man and a manager. We're going to Wembley."

Sunderland pride despite defeat.

Although the away side showed some nice passes and movement when they encroached into Luton's half, they were in trouble virtually every time a high ball came into their box.

The Sunderland Goalkeeping Coach Alessandro Barcherini tweeted: "Thank you to everyone who has shown us love & support along the way. The fans, you’ve been immense. Thank you for making the journey an enjoyable one, even in our toughest moments. Forever grateful!"

Amad Diallo has essnetially just finished a loan move from Manchester United. He tweeted: "Hi guys, i know you are sad, we all are. A group of young guys who fought until the last minute, I can only be proud to have been part of this team. No regrets just proud of what each of us has become over the course of the season. Thank you!"
