FA Cup: Brighton narrowly beat Stoke

 Stoke City 0 - 1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's hopes of securing a first major trophy remain alive as Evan Ferguson's fifth goal of the season proved enough to secure a place in the next round of the FA Cup.

Ferguson's effort saw off a battling Stoke outfit. The home side came closest to equalising when on-loan Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe sent a far-post header across goal and only narrowly wide.

Roberto de Zerbi's men failed to reach the heights that allowed them to beat Liverpool in the previous round. However, Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk turned in another impressive defensive display on his 400th appearance for the club. The away side always had a measure of control against their Championship opponents.

Is history about to be made?

This will only be Brighton's third quarter-final appearance in six years, having previously only been there twice in their entire history.

They reached the final in 1983, when they were beaten 4-0 in a replay by Manchester United. They also reached the semi-final in 2019, when they lost to Manchester City.

Stoke 0 - 1 Brighton

One Brighton fan said: "Good, professional display from Brighton, did enough and didn't look threatened too much until a bit of a nervy end. I thought Stoke were pretty good considering we had a strong team out there. If they can keep a bit of momentum for more than one game, they'll be climbing up the league table."

Colin, a Stoke fan, added: "I thought we played well but just lacked the killer touch while Brighton dominated possession and in patches looked a class above the goal was a thing of beauty though."

Daniel, another Stoke fan, told us via Facebook Messenger: "I thought we played well at times but just didn't have that Premier League quality. Pleased we reach this stage of the competition and I can hope we can put a good run together between now and the end of the season."
