UCL: Ronaldo rescues Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo scored with almost the last kick of the match as Manchester United came from behind to beat Villarreal.

The repeat of last season's Europa League final looked to be heading for a draw but summer signing Ronaldo stroked home from Jesse Lingard's lay-off to spark some incredible scenes. Watch the highlights in the video below

This United side still looked to be papering over the cracks as they once again failed to find any real cohesion in the final third of the pitch.

Ronaldo, Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba all started in front of a passionate Old Trafford crowd. There seems to be little connection between a the clearly talented attacking line-up.

For all the clear problems though, they still managed to find a way to win the match.

Atmosphere

United's home support has often been criticised for being quiet but the fans were certainly up for it against Villarreal. The scenes after the winning goal were incredible and some fans were even still in the ground after an hour celebrating the win.

Manager and player reaction

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, spoketo BT Sport after the match: "That is what happens at Old Trafford. It has happened so many times before. We had to throw caution to the wind and we got lucky in the end. They are a very hard team to play, a very hard team to beat."

He also had a chat with United's social media accounts where he paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Villarreal perspective is going to be very different. People have argued they deserved the win but they didn't take their chances and ultimately this is what cost them. Defender Pau Torres did try and offer some positive though: "We're annoyed. The game was basically over, we just needed to see it out and we didn't.

"We need to learn from this. We were impeccable before that, taking the lead, creating chances, being better than Man Utd at Old Trafford."
