England v Italy - Euro 2020 final

It was so close to coming home. England had a superb tournament but came unstuck in a penalty shootout in the final. The gradual return of crowds throughout the competition meant a special atmosphere. 

Italy's triumph was perhaps unexpected despite their wonderful run of form throughout recent history, Southgate and England went one better than their semi-final spot in the 2018 World Cup. Can they finally win their first trophy since 1966 in Qatar 2022?

Another notable mention from the tournament was France 3-3 Switzerland. The 2018 World Cup winners were knocked out after an enthralling match.

Chelsea v Manchester City - Champions League final

Another all English final. Manchester City were desperate to win their first Champions League title but it never really happened for them on the night. Manchester United v Arsenal - Premier League

It has been a strange year for Manchester United, but they have been involved in superb matches throughout the last 12 months. This one against Arsenal was one of the best. It was an eventful night for Fred. Read the match report here and watch the highlights in the video below.

Barcelona v Paris Saint-Germain - Champions League

PSG thrashed Barcelona in a match that was certainly a sign of things to come for Barca. PSG destroyed them on the night and left people wondering if the French side were about to win their first Champions League title. They would ultimately come unstuck against Manchester City later in the competition. Will they ever win it? 

Messi moves to PSG and Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford

The two players that have defined an era were on the move during the summer transfer window. After long drawn out sagas, Lionel Messi moved to PSG and Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United. It has been a mixed season so far but Ronaldo has still managed several goals. Messi has struggled at times since he moved to Paris.

Scotland: Rangers 1 - 3 Hibernian

It was an eventful year for Rangers. They won their first Scottish Premiership title since 2011. However, they also lost Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa and lost this League Cup semi-final against Hibernian.

Spain - Atletico Madrid win La Liga

Atletico Madrid were crowned champions of Spain in May after they came from behind to beat Real Valladolid 2-1. There was an incredible battle with Real Madrid that lasted until the final day of the campaign.

FA Cup: United win on penalties

 Manchester United 3 - 3 Coventry City Manchester United won 4-2 on penalties  United somehow progressed to the FA Cup final for the second successive season, following a dramatic semi-final victory over Coventry City. The Reds edged past the Sky Blues on penalties after a crazy and eventful 120 minutes to set up a rematch of last year's final, against Manchester City. Following goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, United appeared to be in total and complete control. Despite having a few chances, it did look like this was one match too far for Coventry. However, goals Ellis Simms and O'Hare reduced the deficit and made things very nervy for Ten Hag's side. Then in stoppage time, Haji Wright kept his nerve in stoppage time to score from the spot and send the game into extra time. Premier League: Another strange performance from Manchester United

Manchester United 1 - 1 Burnley Zeki Amdouni scored a late penalty to grab what could he a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford. Despite another unconvincing display from Manchester United, they did look well set for victory thanks to Antony's well-taken 79th-minute effort. Then Burnley got a penalty  Although the referee John Brooks managed to miss the foul in real time, unlike against Wolves the video assistant referee, Peter Bankes, stepped in. Substitute Amdouni managed to send the keeper the wrong way and earn Burnley this point  This result moved Burnley to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.  There could still be a dramatic fight for survival with Burnley, Luton and Forest all scrambling to avoid relegation to the Championship.  You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below.
