Europa Conference League: Vitesse 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur

Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem earned a deserved win in the Europa Conference League.

With players such as Harry Kane and Son Heung-min rested, Tottenham fielded a different starting eleven to the one who beat Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday and they lacked rhythm in a poor performance.

Vitesse finished fourth in the Eredivisie last season and created the better opportunities. This sell-out crowd when Wittek finally made their dominance count. You can watch the highlights in the video below.

The Spurs boss Nuno told the media after the match: "The Europa Conference League is like this; there are always tough moments.

"We have got two home games left and I truly believe they can help us solve the group."

This was the second game in this busy period and it was clearly given a lower priority in an important week. This was proven by the relatively inexperienced team chosen. They go to rivals West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday and then head to Burnley on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The stadium went crazy when Vitesse scored and the joyous celebrations after the final whistle - the home players piling on each other before lapping up the crowd's acclaim - contrasted sharply to the complete dejection from Spurs.

Despite many people expecting Spurs to cruise through the group, they have struggled at times. The big question going forward is how seriously they will take the competition. If they play their first team players in the next three matches, they should comfortably qualify for the next round.

Elsewhere in the competition

Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho was having one of the worst nights in career during their defeat. Mourinho's Roma side were thrashed 6-1 by Bodo/Glimt. It is the first time that a team managed by Mourinho has conceded six or more goals in a single game. This was the1,008th match of his coaching career.

He was clearly very angry after the match: ""I did it with good intentions, to give an opportunity to those who work hard and to rotate the squad on a synthetic pitch in cold weather.

"I never disguised the fact we were a squad with real limitations. We have 13 players who represent one team, the others are on a different level.
