Louie Barry stunner seals victory for Stockport County

Image
Stockport County 1  - 0  Wrexham Louie Barry’s stunning goal proved the difference as Stockport County edged a crucial League One top-six clash with a 1-0 win over Wrexham. Author - Mark Lee Just a few years ago, these teams were battling it out in Non-League, but on this occasion, Wrexham rarely threatened, and Stockport deservedly claimed the points. The match began evenly, but Barry’s moment of brilliance broke the deadlock. When Ollie Norwood’s effort was blocked, the ball fell to Barry, who turned sharply and unleashed a sublime shot into the top corner. Stockport pressed for a second, with Will Collar coming close after nicking the ball off defender Tom O’Connor, only for his effort to be deflected wide. Moments later, Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton kept his side in the contest with a brilliant double save. First, he stretched to tip Collar’s header from Barry’s cross, then recovered quickly to block Fraser Horsfall’s follow-up. Click here for more news and stories...

Bolton boss Ian Evatt was critical of his side's performance: "They wanted it more, played with a better tempo and credit to them, they were fantastic. We were very poor." "This is what can happen in the FA Cup, if you are not how it should be at full tilt for a war, you will get beaten and that is what happened." The result leaves the reigning champions in sixth place, five points behind Arsenal in fourth and a daunting 14 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. City came close to a dream start in the third minute when Josko Gvardiol’s towering header struck the post. Their early dominance eventually paid off in the 14th minute, as Bernardo Silva capitalised on Jeremy Doku’s pass, squeezing a deflected shot past Jarrad Branthwaite into the far corner. Phil Foden nearly doubled the lead, setting up Silva in the box, but the Portuguese midfielder’s first-time effort went wide. Everton, however, made their...

Euro 2024: Italy survive Albania scare

Image
Italy 2 - 1 Albania Holders Italy overcome a huge scare from group outsiders Albania. Italy recovered from the shock of conceding the fastest goal ever scored at a European Championship to beat Albania 2-1 with Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolò Barella ensuring the defending champions made a winning start. Such a narrow margin of defeat may prove useful to Albania’s hopes of scraping third place in the group of death. They will almost certainly need to win their next game though. Not an easy task. Nedim Bajrami’s emphatic finish set a new record for the fastest goal in European Championship history, lifting the roof off a stadium that had never experienced anything like the Albanian influx, which kept the atmosphere electric throughout. Within 23 seconds, Bajrami ensured that this already intense occasion would go down in history. It was inevitable Albania would start aggressively, spurred on by a noisy support that filled at least three-quarters of the venue. Italy wasn't ready....
