Beneath the closed roof, away from Atlanta's searing heat and suffocating humidity, England and perhaps Tuchel's reign were fading fast as they trailed DR Congo until one of the country's greatest-ever players came to their rescue.

There is no doubt England were heading for an embarrassment to rival the Euro 2016 last-16 defeat by Iceland and the shock World Cup loss to the United States in 1950 until Kane, as he has done so many times before, seized control.

Kane's record-breaking career has featured countless memorable moments, but few can rival what he produced in this gripping last-32 tie, which England eventually won 2-1.

With just 15 minutes remaining and the clock seemingly moving ever faster, Kane powered a header beyond goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, whose outstanding display had kept England at bay with a series of superb saves.

Then, with four minutes left, Kane delivered once again.

He produced a moment of genuine quality to send England through to a last-16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
