The Selhurst Park club have beem demoted to Conference League after breaching Uefa ownership rules

They will play in the Europe's third tier competition next season instead of the Europa League after Uefa ruled that the club had breached its multi-club ownership regulations.

The decision follows an investigation into the role of American businessman John Textor, who holds a stake in Palace and is also the majority owner of Lyon. The French side have also qualified for the Europa League, prompting concerns over potential conflicts of interest.

Uefa regulations prevent clubs under the influence of the same individual or entity from competing in the same European competition. A deadline of 1 March 2025 was set for clubs to restructure ownership to comply with the rules. Palace failed to meet this deadline.

The club argued that Textor does not have decisive influence at Selhurst Park. However, Uefa did not accept this defence.

Palace have the right to appeal and are expected to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. If the decision stands, Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, could be promoted to the Europa League in place of the FA Cup winners.

Immediate reaction from Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has released a statement saying that the decision to remove Palace from the Europa League next season is "the biggest injustice in the history of football".

This will be a view supported by Crystal Palace fans. One told us: "We didn't cheat and we didn't really benefit from this guy's involvement. We broke the rules but the rules themselves don't exactly seem to be straightforward."
