After three draws, the winners from the day were probably the teams that weren't playing. Liverpool are now five points clear at the top of the Premier League

Martinelli denies City as Arsenal snatch late draw

Gabriel Martinelli scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Arsenal drew with Manchester City in a hard-fought match at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City struck first through Erling Haaland, who calmly rolled the ball past David Raya to finish a ruthless counterattack.

Arsenal pressed hard after the break in search of an equaliser and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time, when Gabriel Martinelli clipped a deft finish over Gianluigi Donnarumma to send the home crowd into raptures.

Aston Villa held by 10-man Sunderland

Aston Villa’s wait for a first Premier League win continues after 10-man Sunderland came from behind to claim a hard-earned point.

One Villa fan posted on Instagram: “This is starting to get extremely worrying. Sunderland are, factually (though not in reality), the weakest of the three promoted clubs, and yet with a man down for 60 minutes the hosts were well worth their point. They probably deserved all three.

“The only real positive we can take back to Villa Park is that we finally scored a league goal, although the keeper hardly covered himself in glory with what should have been a routine save. You know you are in serious trouble when Matty Cash is not just your top scorer but your only goalscorer.”

Pope thwarts Kluivert as Newcastle and Bournemouth share the points

Newcastle United and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium, with Nick Pope denying Justin Kluivert a dramatic late winner. The Dutch forward’s stoppage-time free-kick was parried away by the Newcastle goalkeeper in what proved the only clear chance of a quiet second half.

Bournemouth, enjoying their best start to a Premier League season, began brightly and looked to unsettle a much-changed Newcastle side. David Brooks created an early opening for Tyler Adams, whose strike was beaten away by Pope, while at the other end Jacob Murphy was denied by Djordje Petrovic.

Both teams grew frustrated after the break. Newcastle’s record signing Nick Woltemade had a penalty appeal waved away when Bafode Diakite tugged his shirt, while Bournemouth supporters were angered when Malick Thiaw escaped a second yellow card for a late foul. In the end, neither side could find the breakthrough, repeating last season’s stalemate between the two clubs.
