The French forward’s brace, coming within the space of two minutes, secured a sixth consecutive victory and stretched Madrid’s lead at the top to five points over Barcelona.

A closer analysis of what happened

Mbappé’s first came from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, a delicately executed Panenka past Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Moments later, he doubled his tally with a composed finish after being slipped through by Arda Güler, taking his total to seven league goals this campaign.

Vinícius Júnior had earlier opened the scoring with a moment of brilliance, bending the ball into the far corner with the outside of his boot from a tight angle.

The Brazilian then turned creator, delivering a crossfield pass that Franco Mastantuono smashed into the top corner. The 18-year-old’s goal, his first since joining in the summer, made him the club’s fourth youngest scorer in La Liga, edging ahead of Vinícius himself.

Levante briefly threatened a revival when Iván Romero’s cross looped up for Etta Eyong to head in at the back post. But Mbappé’s rapid double extinguished any hopes of a comeback, sealing another landmark for Xabi Alonso, who has now become only the second Madrid manager to win his first six league matches.

He will equal Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s record of seven straight victories in 2005 if Madrid can win Saturday’s derby at Atlético

This Real Madrid fan was delighted

Frankie, a member of Real Madrid’s UK Supporters Club, told us: “Another strong performance. They dealt with their fast starts to both halves and then took control. Very impressed with Carreras. It is still early days, and Saturday will be a real test, but if we win that, being 12 points clear with more than 30 games to go, I think Atlético are already out of the title race.

“I have watched every game so far, and Madrid have done everything asked of them. It will take a very special team to stop them this season.”
