Fantastic atmosphere in Madrid

Atletico Madrid scored five goals against city rivals Real for the first time in almost 75 years as they came from behind to claim a pulsating derby victory.

It was only the fourth time Atletico had scored at least five in a Madrid derby, the last occasion being a 6-3 triumph in November 1950.

Real, who had begun the season with six straight La Liga wins and opened their Champions League campaign by beating Marseille, fell to their first defeat of the campaign. The five conceded equalled their heaviest league loss since a 5-1 reverse to Barcelona in October 2018.

Diego Simeone’s side struck first when Robin le Normand headed them in front, but goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler turned the game in Real’s favour. Alexander Sorloth equalised in first-half stoppage time before Julian Alvarez seized control after the interval.

The Argentine forward converted from the spot and then curled in a superb free-kick. Atletico absorbed Real’s pressure and Antoine Griezmann sealed a famous win with a stoppage-time strike.

The result extended Simeone’s strong record in the fixture, with Atletico now unbeaten in their past six league meetings with Los Blancos.

Closer analysis of what happened

Atletico began with intent and were rewarded when Robin le Normand’s header from a Giuliano Simeone cross squeezed through Thibaut Courtois’ hands.

Real responded swiftly as Kylian Mbappe claimed his eighth goal of the season, finishing calmly after Arda Guler’s incisive pass. Guler then put Real ahead with a stylish half-volley from VinĂcius JĂşnior’s cross, only for Julian Alvarez to strike the post within a minute at the other end.

The first half remained breathless. Clement Lenglet had an effort ruled out for handball before Alexander Sorloth headed in Koke’s pinpoint delivery to level the contest on the stroke of half-time.

Momentum swung decisively after the interval. Guler conceded a penalty when he caught Nico Gonzalez with a high boot at a corner, and Alvarez converted with composure. The Argentine soon added his second, curling a free-kick over the wall and past Courtois.

Real turned to their bench but could not regain a foothold. Atletico sealed their statement win when Alex Baena intercepted in midfield and released Antoine Griezmann, who advanced into the box and finished smoothly beyond Courtois.
