The scoring began in unusual fashion as Mihailo Ivanovic netted with a header while lying on the ground. Casper de Norre added a second before 20-year-old Ra'ees Bangura-Williams came off the bench to score his first Millwall goal.

Millwall’s fourth-round tie against Championship leaders Leeds is set for the weekend of Saturday, 8 February, at Elland Road.

A closer look at what happened

The Lions dominated possession with an uncharacteristic 61% against their non-league opponents, but for much of the first half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Despite the sparse attendance at The Den, the away supporters made their presence felt, cheering enthusiastically as early attempts from Joe Bryan and Femi Azeez missed the target.

Millwall eventually broke the deadlock on 30 minutes when Ivanovic, after seeing his initial volley saved by Daggers goalkeeper Elliot Justham, nodded in while still on the ground.

Dagenham had their best spell early in the second half. Josh Rees saw an effort deflected behind, and Millwall somehow survived a chaotic goalmouth scramble from the resulting corner, which ended with Jake Hessenthaler’s mis-hit volley landing safely in goalkeeper Lukas Jensen’s arms.

Ivanovic missed a golden opportunity to double the lead, but De Norre soon made it 2-0 with a superb volley at the far post, finishing off a move he had started with a pinpoint deep cross from Bryan.

The highlight of the night came when substitute Bangura-Williams, fresh from signing a long-term contract, calmly slotted in Millwall’s third with a composed left-footed finish. The goal sealed Alex Neil’s first victory as manager since taking over from Neil Harris in late December.
