EFL Cup: Man United thrash Barnsley

Manchester United 7 - 0 Barnsley

Manchester United enjoyed an ideal evening, securing their biggest victory under Erik ten Hag and easing into the EFL Cup last-16 at the expense of a struggling League One Barnsley side.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen each found the net twice, while Brazilian winger Antony calmly slotted home a first-half penalty. What began as a comfortable performance soon turned into a resounding win.

This marked United’s largest triumph since their 9-0 demolition of Southampton in February 2021, back when the stands were empty due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was undoubtedly a memorable night for Ten Hag's reign, as United hadn’t previously scored five under his management. Eriksen’s late brace only added to the celebration.

Barnsley's travelling supporters were vocal throughout, but Darrell Clarke’s side was completely outclassed. Their highlight of the night came in the first half when Clarke himself showed some brilliance. He skilfully controlled a ball that had flown towards the touchline after the whistle, earning applause from even the home fans.

United handed a first start to their £50.5m midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan had a largely comfortable evening but he impressed with his composure when challenged. His display will give Ten Hag confidence that the squad he’s been striving to build since joining from Ajax in 2022 is nearing completion.

Still, the Dutchman is unlikely to get too carried away, especially after his side’s recent humbling at the hands of Liverpool at Old Trafford just two games ago.

Marcus Rashford and Garnacho impress

Rashford showed plenty of confidence with his first goal, receiving a great crossfield pass from Garnacho, outmaneuvering defender Marc Roberts, and then blasting the ball past Gabriel Slonina. Garnacho then set up Rashford's second goal with a well-placed pass that allowed for a first-time finish.

Rashford was outstanding but It was Garnacho who should have been leaving with the match ball. His two goals included a fantastic second, when the Argentine youngster maintained his composure and buried his shot after sprinting half the length of the field onto Eriksen's superb through ball.

Nightmare night for Barnsley fans

For Barnsley, those travelling fans probably didn't expect much from the game, but conceding seven goals was a nightmare for them. Onwards and upwards them as they return soon to League One action.
