News: Lee Carsley expected to become England interim boss
There has been an interesting announcement from the FA.
Lee Carsley is anticipated to step up as the interim manager for the England men's team for their Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.
Carsley previously guided England Under-21s to victory in the European Championship in 2023, marking their first triumph in the tournament in 39 years.
Gareth Southgate resigned from his role as England manager two days after the team's defeat by Spain in the final of the 2024 Euros last month.
The progression from Under-21s manager to interim senior team manager is a familiar route, with Howard Wilkinson, Stuart Pearce, and Southgate himself having made the transition after leading the Young Lions.
Southgate eventually secured the permanent position and managed the team for eight years, achieving notable successes such as reaching the World Cup semi-final in 2018, the World Cup quarter-final in 2022, and the Euros finals in 2021 and 2024.
The Football Association has been actively searching for Southgate's successor and has posted a job advertisement on their website.
While the FA has not publicly commented on the search for a new manager, they have consistently indicated that an "interim solution" was in place.
Carsley, 50, is a former Premier League midfielder with a 17-year playing career, having represented clubs including Derby and Everton.
He transitioned into management, taking on caretaker roles at Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham before joining the England coaching staff in 2020.

Jamie, a West Ham fan, told us: "If you have watched the U21s, Carsley plays positive, possession-based football - no sideways, backwards to Pickford. His team won the Euros in style. They outplayed Spain, Germany and Portugal on the way while conceding 0 goals. I expect and hope that he does well. It will be interesting to see if gets the job permanently."
Liam, a Manchester United fan, shared his thoughts on the upcoming squad selection. He said: "I look forward to seeing his first squad; there could be quite a few surprises. He had Angel Gomes and Curtis Jones playing brilliantly, holding the centre midfield during the Euros win, and Gordon as a False 9, who was the player of the tournament."
