Euro 2024: Spain reach final after classic match

Spain 2 - 1 France

Lamine Yamal's breathtaking goal helped Spain secure a 2-1 victory over France in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

Dani Olmo netted Spain's second goal after Randal Kolo Muani initially put France in the lead.

A closer look at what happened

Yamal became the youngest player to score at a European Championship or World Cup, surpassing the record previously held by Brazilian legend Pelé. His remarkable goal came when he shifted the ball onto his left foot and curled a stunning shot in off the post from 25 yards out during an electrifying first half.

Earlier in the match, France took the lead with Randal Kolo Muani heading in a superb cross from Kylian Mbappé, who played without a mask after recovering from a broken nose sustained earlier in the tournament.

Yamal's brilliant strike shifted the momentum in Spain's favour, and the comeback was complete soon after when Dani Olmo fired a low shot into the net off defender Jules Koundé, following excellent control in the French penalty area.

In the second half, France tried to mount a response but struggled to break down Luis de la Fuente's side. Mbappé squandered their best chance, firing over the bar in the closing stages.

Inspired by the extraordinary Yamal, this formidable Spain side became the first team to win six consecutive games in European Championship history.

France ultimately fall short in Germany

Despite reaching the World Cup final two years ago and possessing the quality to replicate that success, France ultimately fell short in Germany. A mix of cautious tactics and Mbappé's injury hindered their performance.

Mbappé, who scored only one goal at Euro 2024, hasn't seemed himself since breaking his nose in the opening match against Austria. His brilliant cross set up France's goal here, suggesting a return to form, but he was largely absent during crucial moments.

Didier Deschamps' team departs the tournament having scored just four goals, with only one coming from open play.

What did you think?

David watched the match as a neutral and said, "France could have achieved something in the second half. They had several clear-cut chances, but on so many other occasions, they wasted good positions. They only have themselves to blame and really threw it away."

Michael did the same, he added: The worries and questions that everyone had about this Spanish team, they answered it against France."
