Brighton & Hove Albion: 23/24 Season Review
2023/2024 was another historic campaign for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Let's explore what happened.
This was the 122nd season in the history of Brighton & Hove Albion and their seventh consecutive season in the Premier League.
They also competed in the Premier League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and a debut appearance in UEFA Europa League.
Some of the match reports from their campaign.
On August 12th, they welcomed Luton Town for the opening game of the season, marking the Hatters' debut in the Premier League. Albion emerged victorious with a 4–1 win. This match also saw the debuts of several players, including João Pedro and Simon Adingra.
Against Newcastle United in September, Evan Ferguson scored a hat-trick to show off his extraordinary potential. Amy, a Brighton fan, was delighted with their performance. She said: "We played well against one of the best teams in the Premier League. All the fans are delighted with the attitude of the players. It has been a wonderful start to the season for us."
Two weeks later, there was another fantastic performance from Brighton. They beat Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford. Welbeck (20 minutes), Groß (53 minutes) and João Pedro (71 minutes) gave Brighton a comfortable win. Jamie, a Brighton fan, was very happy with his side's performance: "When we were at Old Trafford, we defended like warriors, marking our opponents really well. No matter the situation, we protected the ball and each other really well.
There was then a run of inconsistent form as they struggled with the extra games brought on by their adventures in the Europa League. This European run did include some memorable moments, including a 2-0 win at Ajax. You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. The footage is from the official TNT Sports YouTube account.
Their first match of 2024 was a 0-0 draw against West Ham United. This match marked the first occasion in 24 league matches that Brighton didn't concede a goal, putting an end to a record-setting streak for the club. After this match, one Brighton fan told us: "We had the opportunities to snatch the victory, but unfortunately, we fell short in the final third. Despite that, there are loads of good things to focus on. We were aiming for all three points, but ended up with just one."
One of their worst performances of the season came in April. They suffered a 3-0 defeat against title challengers Arsenal. Robert, a Brighton fan, told us: "We had an ok first half. After that, our performance wasn't good and we ended up losing against one of the top teams in the Premier League. Due to our injured players, it's always going to be hard to compete against teams like Arsenal."
After some more poor performances, some Brighton fans began to criticise the players.
In May, Joao Pedro scored a late goal as Brighton put a small dent in Aston Villa's Champions League hopes at the Amex Stadium. The winner arrived when Pedro scored a rebound in the 87th minute after his penalty was saved by Robin Olsen. Tony, a Brighton fan, told us "It wasn't a great match, but it's nice to pick up a win. Those Brighton fans who are moaning need to remember where we were a few years ago. Qualifying for Europe was amazing, but we can't expect to do that every season."
In the build-up to the final Premier League game of the season, there was a huge announcement from the club. Head coach Roberto de Zerbi announced he would leave the club after their final Premier League match. This final match was a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United.
