The 38-year-old Belgian takes over from Thomas Tuchel, moving from Burnley to the Bundesliga team after both clubs agreed on a compensation fee thought to be around £10.2 million.

Kompany led Burnley to victory in the Championship during the 2022-23 season, but the team suffered relegation from the Premier League this season, finishing 19th.

After retiring as a player in 2020, Kompany joined Burnley from Anderlecht in 2022 and signed a five-year contract extension just last year.

Despite this, he declined to comment on his future following Burnley's home loss to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season.

Kompany in high demand despite a poor season

Despite a tough season that saw Burnley return to the Championship with only five league wins, the club was planning a swift return to the Premier League under Kompany's leadership.

Before their 2-1 home defeat by Nottingham Forest in the final game, chairman Alan Pace wrote in the matchday programme about the "project" with the Belgian coach and expressed "full faith" in the talented young manager's vision.

Burnley fans respond

It really feels like he's let us down. Taking the Bayern job is understandable, as opportunities like that are rare, but after the season we've had, it feels like a real kick in the teeth. He's abandoned us just 24 hours after the final whistle, jumping ship at the first opportunity.

Kompany won us over with his new style of play, and there was an instant connection after his first game – we truly fell in love with each other. He was passionate in front of the fans, and even when things weren't going well this season, we gave him our unwavering support. Now, his departure feels deeply disappointing.

Reaction from Germany.

These are the words from the new Bayern boss.

Mathew, a Bayern Munich fan, told us: "This job is a totally different beast to what he experienced before. It will be a huge challenge to take the Bundesliga crown back from Leverkusen and challenge in the Champions League. The different types of personalities will be in complete contrast too as he seeks to command the respect of figures such as England skipper Harry Kane, and revered German trio Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich."

There was a similar view held by Thomaz. He added: "Earning the respect of Harry Kane in addition to Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Joshua Kimmich will be crucial. I'm not sure Kompany is the correct manager at the moment but we'll see what happens."
