Non League: Wrexham maintain promotion hopes

Wrexham 1 - 0 Southend United

Wrexham maintained their grip at the top of the National League as they ground out a narrow victory over Southend.

Ollie Palmer's header was well saved by Steve Arnold as the hosts pressed for an opener. However, the Southend goalkeeper then fumbled a Ben Tozer cross into his own net to give Wrexham the lead.

Arnold deflected Eoghan O'Connell's shot onto a post and Dan Mooney wasted a good chance for the Shrimpers when he miskicked his effort from 12 yards.

Wrexham were rewarded for their battling performance with a new club record of 25 league matches unbeaten and a 17th win in 18 home games.

It was perhaps a miracle that the match had even taken place. Conditions were awful before the match, and it's credit to everyone who works for the Welsh side that it went ahead.

Social media reaction and more

Due to Wrexham's new owners, the club now has fans all over the world. One fan from Brazil said: "Now it's just a case of playing well and winning games so as not to let that access slip away. Here in Brazil, we are cheering for you and round after round, I am even more hopeful about this."

Wes, a more locally based Wrexham fan, posted on Twitter: "I’ve seen some good performances this season, and that wasn’t one. However, it gives me as much satisfaction because the conditions were awful. We really dug deep and got the result we need."

Southend manager Kevin Maher told his side's website: "“We grew into the game and took control for long periods but just lacked that final cutting edge. I thought we were very good for long periods without opening them up."

A Southend fan messaged us on Facebook. He said: "We were unlucky in this match. We battled hard and could have potentially pinched a result. I still think we are on course for a decent season despite the obvious problems that we have faced."
