UEL: Man United progress after a memorable European night

Manchester United 2 - 1 Barcelona

(United win 4-3 on aggregate)

This was a tie that should have been a Champions League final.

MUFC 2 - 1 Barcelona

Manchester United produced a stunning second-half comeback to reach the Europa League last 16.  Brazilian duo Fred and Antony, who came on as a half-time substitute, both drilled home low first-time shots in front of a bouncing Stretford End that had older United fans thinking back to a memorable night in 1984.

It was a victory that looked so unlikely at half-time as Barcelona led thanks to Robert Lewandowski's 18th-minute penalty.

Antony's arrival at half-time changed the course of the tie as it injected more pace into United's attacks.

The Red Devils now move on to Wembley, where they will look to collect their first silverware since 2017. United will face Real Betis in the next round of the competition.

Fan reaction

There was a lot of reaction from Manchester United fans from across the world.

Dean told us: "Been a while since I’ve enjoyed a European night like this as a United fan. This is what it’s all about, top class from Erik Ten Hag, the players, and the home fans. "

Ken added: "As short as people say Lisandro Martinez is, I love his toughness, ruggedness, discipline, passion, ability to pass the ball and defend well and his no-nonsense attitude towards his opponents on the pitch. What an absolute leader and butcher on the pitch."

Peter was also delighted with the performance. He said: "Fans were the 12th man, Ten Hag is a genius. I would have ripped up Fred’s contract at half-time, but he kept him on. There's something special is brewing at my club.

Olivia is a big Fred fan, she told us: "I love Fred and Bruno. Amazing from them both."

We managed to speak with one Barca fan after the game. Alumra told us: "It was poor from us over the two matches. Manchester deserved the victory. I hope they win the cup and bring back their glory days."
