UCL: Same old problems for Chelsea

 Borussia Dortmund 1 - 0 Chelsea

It was the same old problems for Chelsea in Germany.

Dortmund v Chelsea

However, they are very much still in the competition and will fancy their chances of getting the required result in the second-leg.

Karim Adeyemi scored a stunning solo goal as Chelsea suffered defeat in their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie at Borussia Dortmund. Potter's men rued their missed chances as Joao Felix shot over from a good position and then hit the crossbar in the first half.

Reece James also forced two fine saves out of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel in the second half as the visitors grew in confidence against the hosts, who were themselves struggling to create many chances.

The atmosphere throughout the match was amazing!

Chelsea were undone on the counter midway through the second period when Adeyemi broke from inside his own half following a corner from the Premier League side. He knocked the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga before slotting it into an empty net.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser and Emre Can swept the ball right off the goalline as Kalidou Koulibaly's deflected strike looks certain to trickle into the net. Finally, Enzo Fernandez thought he'd equalised in stoppage time. However, his long-range strike was stopped superbly by Kobel as Dortmund held on.

Fan reaction

Becky, a Chelsea fan, told us: "It wasn't a great performance but we're still in with a shout of qualifying for the next round."

Liam watched the match as a neutral. He said: "Chelsea looked promising at times but they really need a world-class striker if they're going to succeed at home or in Europe"

Makaveli The Don commented on YouTube: "What a goal by Adeyemi! Dortmund have so many talented young players. As soon as they sell one, they have another one ready to replace them. Brandt looked good too, and that last-ditch tackle was excellent."

Another fan was quite positive. He commented on the same highlights: "I know we lost but again looked decent, defensively they were solid but were lacking that cutting edge again in the final third. We had plenty of brilliant opportunities but just couldn't take them. They really need someone who will consistently score. And what a goal by Adayemi, brilliant at his age!"
