Nations League: England awful against Hungary

England 0 - 4 Hungary

England's awful recent continued as they slumped to a terrible defeat against a ruthless Hungary to leave Gareth Southgate's side rooted to the bottom of their Nations League group.

Southgate's side has now gone four games without a victory for the first time since 2014 and they look worryingly out of form and confidence with a World Cup looming at the end of this year.

They capitulated to a humiliating and potentially damaging defeat that had the crowd booing and baying for Southgate's job at the final whistle.

Roland Sallai put the visitors in front with a well-taken finish at the back post, then doubled Hungary's lead with his second on the break 20 minutes from time.

There was more to come from a rampant Hungary, as Zsolt Nagy fired in from range and after John Stones was sent off to compound a woeful evening for the hosts. Daniel Gazdag finished smartly to wrap up a second historic win over England in 10 days.

Jarrod Bowen had earlier missed a decent chance at the back post from Reece James' cross and Harry Kane flicked a header against the bar, but the hosts once again lacked the belief and inventiveness to open up their opposition.

Hungary were well organised and clinical to earn only their second win over the Three Lions on English soil and first since a famous 6-3 success at Wembley in 1953.

Reaction

England manager Gareth Southgate told Channel 4: "We picked a young team with energy and when the game started to go against them it started to look that way, that is my responsibility in the end. At half-time we needed to go for the game and made changes with more of an attacking impetus. It left us more open when we were pushing and it left us wide open. Across the four matches, that is my responsibility,

"I tried to balance looking at new players, resting players we could not keep flogging but in the end the teams have not been strong enough in the two Hungary games, the other two results were positive but tonight is a chastening experience."

Outside of those in the stadium, the reaction online was also very negative.

One England fan commented on YouTube: "Learnt nothing from the first Hungary game. Carried on passing around the back nonchalantly as though we’re in control, Hungary waiting patiently for us to eventually move up the pitch at which point the press and break.

Worked wonders last time and again here. Lacked creativity and lost all energy the minute Gallagher was taken off. Congratulations Hungary."
