A statement on Cardiff's statement reads: "We would like to thank Mick and Terry for their efforts during their time with the Bluebirds and wish them all the best for the future.
"Steve Morison and Tom Ramasut will oversee first-team duties at this time, as the Board of Directors begin the process of appointing a permanent replacement."
It was a former Cardiff manager in Neil Warnock who inflicted the last rites for McCarthy. Warnock masterminded a comfortable victory for his Middlesbrough side at the Cardiff City Stadium. This persuaded the Welsh club's owners to act.
Assistant manager Terry Connor has also left the club. Their Under 23s boss Steve Morison has taken temporary charge of the first team alongside his assistant Tom Ramasut.
Fan reaction
Within a few minutes of the announcement, Cardiff fans took to social media to speak about the situation at their club. Cardiff fan Stephen Morris posted: "It’s not the manager need to change- the board need to change. You need to have experience and knowledge regarding how to actually run a football club. "
Another fan was highly critical of the club's decision making: "Not a moment too soon. Good riddance. Having said that, I have no faith in the board with the next appointment. I'm sure there's some other dinosaurs out of work that they'll have their eyes on."
