England ease to comfortable win over Latvia

Image
England 3 - 0 Latvia Thomas Tuchel made it two wins from two as England manager with a World Cup qualifying victory over Latvia at Wembley. Author - Mark Lee Stadium - Wembley Stadium Just as in their previous match against Albania, England found themselves frustrated for long spells against a side ranked 140th in the world before finally converting dominance into goals. Chelsea captain Reece James marked his first England start since September 2022 with a superb free kick from 20 yards, curling the ball into the net seven minutes before half time. Despite controlling possession, England struggled to extend their lead as Latvia defended doggedly. That changed in the 68th minute when Harry Kane turned in his 71st international goal from Declan Riceā€™s cross. With Latvia tiring, substitute Eberechi Eze added a third with a deflected strike 14 minutes from time, scoring his first England goal. The result saw Tuchel become the first England menā€™s manager to win his opening two competiti...

Image
Liverpool 1 - 2 Newcastle United Newcastle United ended a seven-decade wait for a domestic trophy with a fully deserved Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley. Author - William G Stadium - Wembley Stadium Eddie Howeā€™s side delivered a performance of discipline and intensity, sparking wild celebrations among the Toon Army as goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak either side of half-time secured their historic win. Burn, fresh from his first England call-up, powered home a header from Kieran Trippierā€™s corner in first-half stoppage time, before Isak capitalised on Jacob Murphyā€™s knockdown to fire in a clinical finish seven minutes after the break. Liverpool, still reeling from their midweek Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, pulled one back through substitute Federico Chiesa in added time, setting up a tense finale. But Newcastle held firm, surviving a nervy finish to lift their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup and their first major ho...

EFL: The Saints march on

Image
Southampton 3 - 1 West Brom Southampton are set to face Leeds United in the Championship play-off final, following a dazzling second-half display that secured their victory over West Bromwich Albion. After a goalless first leg, Saints midfielder Will Smallbone broke the deadlock in the second leg, curling a shot from an angle into the top right corner of Baggies keeper Alex Palmer's net from just inside the box. Adam Armstrong doubled Southampton's lead, igniting a celebratory atmosphere in the stadium with just over ten minutes left on the clock. The hosts' spot at Wembley was sealed when Armstrong scored his second goal from the penalty spot after Ryan Manning was fouled, rendering Cedric Kipre's injury-time header for the visitors merely a consolation. Southampton supporters turned out in their thousands, gathering outside the stadium with red and white flares, lining the streets more than two hours before kick-off. Pyrotechnics and flamethrowers added to the el...

International Friendly: England lose against Iceland

Image
England 0 - 1 Iceland England wrapped up their preparations for Euro 2024 with a dismal defeat against Iceland at Wembley. Manager Gareth Southgate made several changes following Mondayā€™s win against Bosnia-Herzegovina at St Jamesā€™ Park in Newcastle, but he will have been deeply disappointed with the team's lacklustre performance. Iceland, notorious for their victory over England at Euro 2016, easily exploited England's poor defending. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who replaced Jordan Pickford, might have done better with Jon Dagur Thorsteinssonā€™s low shot after 12 minutes. Harry Kane missed a great chance for England, while Chelseaā€™s Cole Palmer, one of the brighter performers, also had opportunities. However, Southgateā€™s side looked rusty as they finalised plans for their opening Euro 2024 match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on 16 June. England appeared vulnerable at the back throughout the match, with Iceland creating chances to extend their lead after the break. Interna...

Marc Guehi, Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell all made their debuts as England completed the turnaround with 12 minutes left when Kane scored from the spot after VAR adjudged that Steven Zuber had  handled from a corner. Kane scored with his usual expertise and now stands just four goals behind England's record marksman Wayne Rooney. PL News: United trigger extension to Ten Hag contract

Image
United are expected to make many personnel changes this summer. The manager won't be one of them.   Manchester United have activated a one-year extension in Erik ten Hag's contract, ensuring he remains with the club until 2026. The Dutch manager's original contract, signed upon his appointment in 2022, was set to expire in 2025. Since joining from Ajax, Ten Hag has secured two trophies in his two years at Old Trafford. In Ten Hag's first season at the club, United finished third in the Premier League and ended a six-year trophy drought by defeating Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. However, his second season was more challenging, with United finishing eighth in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League at the group stage.
