Premier League: Leeds battle for draw against Villa

Image
Leeds United 0 - 0 Aston Villa A goalless draw at Elland Road was a good one for Leeds United, who spent the entire second half a player down, battling against an Aston Villa side that was looking to take all three points. The Whites returned to Premier League action after 29 days without a match, following recent postponements and the international break.  When the match kicked off inside a packed out and eagerly awaiting Elland Road, both teams set off on the front foot looking to gain the early advantage, using their respective supporters to their advantage.  However, very little early on in terms of chances were to come, largely due to the stop-start nature of the match and plenty of early fouls between the teams. The first to be booked for one was Ludwig Augustinsson for the visitors, but he would not be the only name in the notepad early on. Shots on goal did arrive and both number one’s on the day were called into action. Illan Meslier denied Ollie Watkins, before both Bren

EFL: Leeds United reach Championship Play-Off final

Leeds United 4 - 0 Norwich City  There was a fantastic atmosphere at Elland Road before the match. After a dill and dreary stalemate in the first leg, Leeds United were out to shine against Norwich City. The home side, who finished three places and 17 points above the Canaries, took a deserved early lead. Ilia Gruev's long-range free-kick beat Angus Gunn at his near post. Elland Road was bouncing Joel Piroe then made it 2-0 when he headed in Willy Gnonto's deep cross to the far post. Norwich keeper Gunn was caught in no man's land, this left them 2-0 early on and with a mountain to climb. Despite their poor performance, they did have opportunities that, if scored, would have made a game of it. They should have pulled one back immediately. Josh Sargent was thwarted by keeper Illan Meslier one-on-one.  This is the place for all the latest EFL news and stories (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) EFL: We all love the drama of the playoffs.  Leeds United 0 - 1 Arsenal Arsenal held on to win at Leeds in a dramatic finish to a remarkable Premier League football match The match had been delayed by about 40 minutes because of a power outag at Elland Road There was additional drama in added time when the referee sent off Arsenal's Gabriel for kicking out at Leeds striker Patrick Bamford. 'non-experts' ae saying: European Super Football: Reporter: Phil Thomas Our resident Arsenal fan has had his say. Phil Thomas said: I'm still not sure to be honest. I would have taken top four and success in one of the three cups at the start of the season. Now, a little part of me thinks we can win the title. The big tests will come in March and April. That's when previous title bids have faded away in the past. The Guardian: Journalist: Nick Ames The Guardian's football coverage remains very popular. This is what their Nick Ames said: It augurs well when the breaks start going your way. Premier League: It's all change at Leeds United

Leeds United have sacked manager Javi Gracia and appointed Sam Allardyce as they try to avoid relegation.  Spaniard Gracia was appointed in February and has been sacked after only 10 weeks and 12 games in charge at Elland Road. Allardyce has been tasked with guiding 17th-placed Leeds, who are out of the bottom three only on goal difference, to safety with four games remaining.  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) His first game for his club is against Manchester City on Saturday. Gracia's final match in charge was Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Bournemouth. Can Leeds do the unthinkable and beat City? That latest heavy loss followed an awful run of results that included 6-1, 5-1 and 4-1 defeats against Liverpool , Crystal Palace and Arsenal respectively.  Premier League: It was a dramatic Sunday (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) This dismissal takes the total of managerial changes in the Premier League to 15 for the season, five more than in any other previous campaign.

EFL Cup: Middlesbrough ease to win against Leeds

Image
Leeds United 0 - 3 Middlesbrough  Middlesbrough secured a spot in the second round of the Carabao Cup after scoring three goals in just 16 minutes to defeat Championship rivals Leeds United at Elland Road. The first half was closely contested but the away side broke the deadlock when Anfernee Dijksteel drifted in from the right touchline and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. As Leeds pushed forward, Josh Coburn played in Delano Burgzorg, who kept his composure and found the net with a deflected strike off Joe Rodon. Leeds manager Daniel Farke made five substitutions in the 65th minute, but shortly after, Coburn tapped into an empty net, securing Boro’s first win at Elland Road since 2011. A closer look at what happened Last season’s meetings between the sides saw 12 goals, and the frantic start to this match hinted at more of the same. EFL: Sunderland sign Leeds striker on loan

Image
Is this is a good move for everyone concerned? Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt had been linked with a return to his former club Wigan Athletic but in the end, he made the temporary move to Sunderland. The 20-year-old will remain with the Black Cats until the end of the season after making 15 Premier League appearances so far this campaign. Gelhardt becomes the Wearside club's third signing of the January window after Pierre Ekwah and Isaac Lihadji. The England Under-20 international has scored two goals in 41 first-team appearances for Leeds and joins a Sunderland side who lie in ninth place in the Championship, a point outside the play-offs. All the best reaction Manager Tony Mowbray told the Sunderland website: "It is no secret that Joe had plenty of options on the table this month, so it is a testament to the club and its staff that he felt Sunderland was the best move for him. He has made an impact at Premier League level throughout the past 18 months, and he i

Daniel Farke's men continued to have the upper hand after the break and were rewarded when Pascal Struijk blasted in from a 69th-minute corner as the Blades conceded for the first time in more than 11 hours. Substitute Mateo Joseph sealed the derby win with a 90th-minute second goal as he finished well from Joel Piroe's pass. EFL: Greatest ever play-off matches

We all love the drama of the playoffs.  They are a series of matches contested by the four football teams that finish below the automatic promotion places in the second, third and fourth tiers of English football. They were first introduced to the EFL in 1987 and have been staged after every season since. Some hate them and others love them. Premier League: Man United battle to win over Leeds

Leeds United 0 - 2 Manchester United The Red Devils scored twice in the final 10 minutes at Elland Road to leave Leeds deep in relegation trouble. Three days on from Marcus Rashford netting the Red Devils' first goal as they came back from 2-0 down at home to secure a Premier League draw, he broke the deadlock when he rose to meet Luke Shaw's curling cross to head past Illan Meslier for his 21st goal of a superb season. Alejandro Garnacho then outpaced the home defence before beating Meslier at his near post to the joy of Erik ten Hag. Many pundits have argued that the result was harsh on Leeds. They created a number of opportunities but could not beat David de Gea. Reaction The United boss told MUTV: "We made changes to avoid fatigue. We are the only team in Europe to be in four competitions, so we have to rotate, but we also have to use the group from a tactical point of view. I think that's what wins the game."  One fan told us: "Maguire & Malacia

Transfer Rumour: Liverpool ramp up interest in Raphinha

Image
Liverpool are reportedly ramping up interest in £60million Leeds winger Raphinha With Sadio Mane set to leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool believes Raphinha could be the ideal replacement.  A report in the Mirror has suggested that backup attacker Takumi Minamino could be the bait to lure the Brazilian to Merseyside. Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the speedy 25-year-old attacker who scored 11 Premier League goals and grabbed three assists despite a poor season for Leeds.  Raphinha is also on Barcelona's wanted list. He is currently on international duty with Brazil, fits the bill perfectly for Liverpool's high energy style under Klopp. The Liveropool manager may have an ace up his sleeve in getting this deal done. Leeds are slowly rebuilding under American coach Jesse Marsch after their narrow relegation escape. They are keen on Minamino who joined Liverpool in a £7.25million deal in January 2020. The 27-year-old Japanese international was only a squad player last season. He

PL: Fernandes shines as Man United beat Leeds

Leeds United 2 - 4 Manchester United Let's check all the reaction as Manchester United survived a second-half scare to win 4-2 at Elland Road. Substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga both found the net in the final 20 minutes. United went into a two-nil lead before the break thanks to goals from Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes. However, Leeds responded in the second half. Quickfire goals from both Rodrigo and Raphinha had pulled Marcelo Bielsa's side level before Fred and Elanga ensured all three points returned to Old Trafford. It was Leeds who carved open the first real chance of the game after just five minutes, as Mateusz Klich cleverly found Jack Harrison unmarked with a lofted through pass. He failed to trouble David De Gea and fired his effort wide of the mark. The drama intensified in stoppage time when Portsmouth were awarded a penalty after Jayden Bogle’s challenge on Christian Saydee. Lang calmly converted the 92nd-minute spot-kick, giving Pompey what seemed to be a late victory. But Aaronson had other ideas, firing in a low shot to ensure Leeds claimed a point.
