Forrest the hero on trophy day

Image
Celtic 1 - 1 St. Mirren James Forrest ensured the club’s title celebrations were not dampened as he netted a stoppage-time equaliser to preserve a 16-season scoring streak and deny St Mirren a memorable win.  Author - Andrew Cheshire Stadium - Celtic Park With seconds remaining, the veteran winger swept the ball past St Mirren goalkeeper Zach Hemming, securing a 1-1 draw and extending his remarkable scoring run in every league season since his debut. It was a dramatic end to an afternoon where the visitors looked set to upset the champions and claim a rare win at Celtic Park. Jonah Ayunga had earlier stunned the home crowd with a low drive into the corner after Celtic failed to clear a set piece, giving St Mirren hope of European qualification. A win might have been enough to leapfrog Dundee United into a Europa Conference League spot, especially with United trailing Aberdeen at one stage. But United mounted a comeback in their match, and Forrest’s late intervention ensured th...

Scotland: Celtic remain in charge of title race

Image
Dundee 1 - 2 Celtic A double from James Forrest helped Celtic beat Dundee and maintained their three-point Scottish Premiership lead. A screen grab from a Twitter video showing Celtic players celebrating. Forrest marked his return to the Celtic starting line-up with a stunning first-half volley from the edge of the box and low drive midway through the second period. Dundee got back into the game after Adam Idah deflected an Antonio Portales shot past Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart. Despite some late pressure, they were unable to deny the visitors victory. Despite another win for Rangers, the title is still Celtic's to lose with four rounds of fixtures to play and the Old Firm still to meet.  Dundee remain two points behind fifth-placed St Mirren and remain in contention for a Europa Conference qualifying place. Should they achieve that, it would surely be the best season in their recent history.  You can find out what the Celtic manager thought by watching the video below. Th...

Scotland: Celtic win at Livingston

Image
Livingston 1 - 3 Celtic Celtic convincingly overcame their Livingston to restore their three-point Scottish Premiership lead, says manager Ange Postecoglou. Captain Callum McGregor missed a penalty before Daizen Maeda headed in the opener from a disputed corner. A Nicky Devlin own goal and James Forrest's fine finish made it 3-0. Andrew Shinnie's close-range reply couldn't deny Celtic a first win at Livingston since 2007. The away support created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the game One Celtic fan told us: "It was a comfortable win. That was something that everyone needed. Onwards and upwards now!" Reaction Livingston manager David Martindale told the media: "I think Celtic were very good and very clinical. I don't think we deserved much more from the game, but with the two decisions leading to goals you feel a little hard done-by. FT - The visitors end a 15-year wait for a win in West Lothian to take all three points back to Glasgow LIV 1-3 CEL...

Scotland: Celtic progress to Scottish Cup Final

Image
Celtic 3 - 3 Aberdeen Celtic won 6-5 on penalties Celtic clinched victory on penalties in a thrilling match at Hampden Park, securing their spot in the Scottish Cup final and leaving Aberdeen fans devastated. The game was a nail-biting affair, with both teams showcasing their skill in a tense shootout. Joe Hart, Celtic's goalkeeper, had the opportunity to seal the win with his team's fifth penalty, but his shot hit the post, keeping the game on a knife-edge. Yet, Hart redeemed himself by saving Killian Phillips' penalty, securing Celtic's victory. Now, Celtic awaits the outcome of the match between Hearts and Rangers next month, as they aim to claim the prestigious Scottish Cup for a record-breaking 42nd time. The match itself was nothing short of extraordinary, with Aberdeen delivering two late equalisers to keep the contest alive. Angus MacDonald's header in the 119th minute seemed to complete a remarkable comeback after his earlier mistake had led to Celtic...

St Johnstone relegated

Image
Hearts 2 - 1 St Johnstone St Johnstone’s 16-year tenure in the Scottish Premiership came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night, undone by a late Ross County equaliser in Dundee and their own defeat in a breathless encounter at Tynecastle. Author - Josh T Stadium - Tynecastle The Perth club had flirted with relegation for months, and despite a glimmer of hope as events elsewhere briefly swung in their favour, the night ultimately ended in despair. Simo Valakari’s side, who have languished at the foot of the table since just before Christmas, are now four points adrift with one match to play — their fate sealed before the final weekend. It was a night that veered between agony and faint optimism. Trailing 2-0 in Edinburgh while County and Dundee remained level, St Johnstone seemed destined for the drop. But when Dundee took the lead late on, hope flickered again. That was extinguished in stoppage time as County struck from the spot, leaving the Perth side beyond reach. At Tynecas...

Scotland: Celtic ease to win against Hearts

Image
Celtic 3 - 0 Hearts Celtic moved a little bit closer to the title after easing past Hearts in Glasgow.  They face Rangers next weekend in a match that could decide the title. If Celtic avoid defeat, they will almost certainly end up as champions.  Kyogo Furuhashi scored the opening goal for Celtic in a fast-paced match at Celtic Park. He nodded the ball in from a cross by his fellow countryman Reo Hatate.  The Hearts team responded quickly, but Celtic extended their lead when Matt O'Riley's impressive long-range pass found Kyogo, who scored with a first-time shot and got his second of the match.  Kyogo then  had chances to score more goals in the first half, but Zander Clark, the Hearts goalkeeper, made some excellent saves. He also made a fantastic double save in the second half to deny Hatate and O'Riley. Celtic were awarded a late penalty after an on-field review showed that Lawrence Shankland had handled the ball in the box. O'Riley stepped up to t...

Champions Celtic fight back against Hibs

Image
Celtic 3 - 1 Hibernian Celtic fought back from a goal down to stretch Hibernian's winless run at Parkhead to 22 games. Author - Sean M Stadium - Celtic Park Traveling to face the Scottish Premiership champions during a stunning run of form that included a victory over Celtic at Easter Road in February, third-place Hibs opened the scoring when Martin Boyle took advantage of Auston Trusty's poor defending. Celtic always appeared dangerous in attack and equalized when Nicolas Kuhn received a ball played in behind, rounded goalkeeper Jordan Smith and finished. You never felt that Hibernian were going to win at that point. Ultimately, it would be very comfortable for Celtic.  READ MORE: Celtic news and stories from European Super Football Four minutes later, German winger Kuhn set up striker Adam Idah with a delightful chip over the Hibs defense, putting Rodgers' side ahead at halftime. Can Celtic cause a shock in Munich

Bayern Munich v Celtic preview Bayern Munich lead 2-1 after what was an entertaining first leg in Glasgow Author - Sean M After edging past Celtic with a 2-1 victory in Glasgow last week, Bayern Munich will be eager to confirm their place in the Champions League last 16 when they host the Scottish champions at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. Will the atmosphere at Bayern Munich match the one at Celtic? Vincent Kompany’s side were forced to defend for long spells in Saturday’s goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen, though they remain eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. This contest, however, is expected to be a different affair, with Bayern likely to dominate on home turf. Celtic, meanwhile, will be looking to spring a surprise in Munich. Brendan Rodgers’ men head into the fixture with confidence after a commanding 3-0 victory over Dundee United, which extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Celtic move three points clear at the top

Image
Hearts 1 - 4 Celtic Clinical Celtic opened up a three-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a commanding victory over Hearts at Tynecastle. Author - Sean M With Aberdeen suffering their first league defeat of the season earlier in the day, Brendan Rodgers' side seized the opportunity to establish clear daylight between themselves and the Dons for the first time this campaign. Celtic were sluggish in the first half, though, and were lucky to head into the break level. Blair Spittal and Lawrence Shankland both squandered excellent chances to put Hearts ahead. The second half, however, was a completely different story. Kyogo Furuhashi broke the deadlock with his seventh goal of the season, pouncing on a deflected clearance by Daniel Oyegoke after Craig Gordon's initial save. Minutes later, Nicholas KĂĽhn doubled the lead with a superb counter-attacking goal, finishing clinically to put Celtic firmly in control. Celtic Football Club news and stories Adam Idah add...

Idah denies Rangers in Glasgow Derby

Image
Rangers 1 - 1 Celtic Celtic came from behind to deny Rangers a third consecutive Old Firm win, as Adam Idah’s second-half equaliser earned the visitors a point and preserved a long-standing unbeaten record at Ibrox. Author - Mark Lee Stadium - Ibrox Nicolas Raskin saw an early header ruled out for offside before Cyriel Dessers struck just before half-time with his 25th goal of the season. But Idah levelled shortly after the interval, silencing the home crowd and compounding Rangers’ frustration. The draw means Rangers have failed to win at Ibrox for the seventh straight fixture. This is an unwelcome run for the temporary Rangers boss as he looks to get the job permanently. A closer look at what happened at Ibrox. For Celtic, the point ensures they maintain their 17-point advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership, having already secured the title with games to spare. While the league may be settled, the suggestion this match was a dead rubber never quite rang true. Celtic, br...

International Friendly: Scotland eventually triumph against Gibraltar

Image
Gibraltar 0 - 2 Scotland With the squad enduring a seven-game winless streak and grappling with injuries, it took Scotland until the 58th minute to break the deadlock against the world’s 203rd ranked team. Ryan Christie finally opened the scoring, lashing the ball home just before the hour mark in frustration. Che Adams added a decisive second goal late on, securing a much-needed, if uninspiring, win in Portugal. The 2,000 travelling Scotland fans shouldn’t have had to wait so long for their team to score, given the volume of chances created against their lowly opponents. Grant Hanley and James Forrest, in particular, squandered golden opportunities, while Christie and Kenny McLean also could have done better inside the box. UCL: A great European night for Celtic

Image
Celtic 5 - 1 Slovan Bratislava Celtic delivered a commanding performance at a lively Celtic Park to secure their first-ever opening Champions League victory in emphatic fashion, overpowering Slovan Bratislava. In a rare instance where they started as favourites in Europe's top competition, Brendan Rodgers' team produced an energetic and composed display. Liam Scales sent the home crowd into raptures in the 17th minute, heading in Arne Engels' corner. Despite creating several chances before half-time, the Scottish champions couldn’t extend their lead. Kyogo Furuhashi eased any nerves just two minutes into the second half, steering Nicolas Kuhn’s powerful cross into the net, putting fears of missed opportunities to rest. Visit this page for more Celtic news and stories Celtic continued to create chances, and after Alistair Johnston was fouled by Danylo Ihnatenko, the impressive Engels calmly slotted home from the penalty spot for a third. Kartum double fires Hearts into Scottish Cup last four

Image
Hearts 3 - 1 Dundee Sander Kartum lit up Tynecastle with two superb goals as Hearts booked their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals at the expense of Dundee. Author - Mark Lee Stadium - Tynecastle Park The January signing from Brann broke his Hearts duck with a stunning strike from 20 yards to give the hosts a first-half advantage. Joe Shaughnessy nodded in Ziyad Larkeche's cross for parity after the interval but Simon Murray's headed own goal from Blair Spittal's free-kick put the hosts ahead again. And Kartum spun and sliced a low shot through the Dundee defence to ensure Neil Critchley's side progressed to the last four. Elton Kabangu, Calem Nieuwenhof and Alan Forrest were denied by Trevor Carson as Hearts pressed for a more emphatic victory. However, many fans would have accepted a fairly routine victory to reach the semi-finals. Critchley and his players can spend the next three days sizing up their potential opponents on the weekend of 19 and 20 April. The...

Scotland: Celtic maintain unbeaten SPL start

Image
Livingston 0 - 3 Celtic Four days after their disappointing loss in the Champions League in Rotterdam, Celtic were determined to reaffirm their dominance in domestic competitions.  They faced a close call early on as Bruce Anderson forced a save from Celtic's goalkeeper, Joe Hart, and Scott Pittman's subsequent shot was cleared off the goal line by Callum McGregor. As Brendan Rodgers' team increased their attacking efforts, Daizen Hatate found himself in a promising position to score after receiving a pass from Greg Taylor. Unfortunately for Livingston, Luiyi De Lucas fouled Hatate in the box, resulting in a penalty. The Japanese midfielder's penalty squeezed under the body of Shamal George, marking his first goal of the season. The home team needed to stay competitive, and George made an excellent save to deny another attempt by Maeda. Hart's day came to an abrupt end when Sangare chased a long ball and collided with the goalkeeper outside the penalty area. ...

Celtic might have to wait another week to clinch title

Image
St Johnstone 1 - 0 Celtic St Johnstone pulled off a surprise victory over Celtic, denying the reigning champions the chance to wrap up the Scottish Premiership title in front of their home support next weekend. Author - Sean M Stadium - McDiarmid Park Brendan Rodgers’ side knew that a win at McDiarmid Park would have set up the opportunity to clinch a fourth consecutive league crown when they host Kilmarnock on Saturday. But an early thumping header from Daniels Balodis, following a well-delivered free-kick by Graham Carey, gave the hosts a crucial lead. That goal, combined with a resilient defensive display, saw the league’s bottom side move to within five points of Dundee. Celtic could still secure the title next weekend if they beat Kilmarnock and Rangers drop points away to Aberdeen on Sunday. However, Balodis’ first goal for the club has, for now at least, postponed any plans of celebrating on home turf. The early breakthrough seemed to energise the Perth side. While Celti...

Author - Sean M Stadium - Hampden Park Brendan Rodgers, who remains unbeaten in 14 matches at Hampden Park, will return with his side to the national stadium on Saturday 24 May, where they will aim to secure a third successive Scottish Cup triumph. Any uncertainty about the outcome was dispelled by half-time. Celtic delivered a blistering end to the first half, scoring four times in just 12 minutes to leave St Johnstone reeling. From the opening whistle, the holders dominated possession and territory, eventually finding a breakthrough when captain Callum McGregor guided a precise strike into the corner of the net. That opener set the tone for a relentless spell. McGregor turned provider minutes later, slipping a perfectly judged pass into the path of Daiz...

Scotland: Celtic almost clinch another title

Image
Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers Celtic practically secured their third consecutive Scottish Premiership title with a win against a 10-player Rangers team in an intense Glasgow Derby. In a match pulsating with energy, Brendan Rodgers' side , sitting three points ahead with just three games to go, knew that securing a victory would almost clinch glory.  Right from the start, the Hoops asserted their dominance over their Glasgow rivals. It was Matt O'Riley who finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, capitalising on numerous earlier opportunities. Immediately after the break, John Lundstram inadvertently turned the ball into his own net and was subsequently shown a red card for a reckless challenge, leaving Rangers depleted.  Just before that, Cyriel Dessers managed to pull one back for the visitors. Game on? Celtic earned a penalty when Mohamed Diomande fouled Alistair Johnston in the box. O'Riley stepped up, but his effort was saved by Jack Butland. Although Rodgers' te...

Celtic are now just one point from the title

Image
Celtic 5 - 1 Kilmarnock Celtic moved to the brink of yet another Scottish Premiership title after a blistering first-half performance against Kilmarnock.  Author - Sean M Stadium - Celtic Park The Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers demanded a response following the loss to the division's bottom side. Within 24 minutes of this match against Kilmarnock kicking off, Celtic were four ahead thanks to a stunning array of goals, with Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and two Reo Hatate.  Danny Armstrong's cross sailed home for some brief respite for Derek McInnes' men. However, the champions-elect utterly dominated the first half of this match. They would have been happy to be only trailing 4-1 at half-time. Not a good place to be in. They then eased up slightly but the icing on the cake arrived in injury time as substitute Anthony Ralston danced into the box and found the far corner. A closer look at what happened and why it happened It had been reported in some outlets that the ...
