QPR 1 - 1 Millwall | Millwall won 2-0 on penalties

A fantastic goalkeeping performance sees Millwall progress. Millwall keeper Lukas Jensen saved all four QPR penalties in the shootout as the Lions booked their place in the second round

West Ham 3 - 1 Portsmouth

West Ham have started preparation for life back in the Championship with a win over Portsmouth in the EFL Cup. They scored three goals in seven minutes as they came from behind to beat Pompey. This was the highest attendance ever at this stage of the competition.

Stoke City 2 - 0 Oldham Athletic

League Two Oldham made Championship side Stoke City work hard for this win to earn them progress to the next round.

Wolves 3 - 0 Port Vale

New Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Cesar Peixoto celebrated a winning start to his reign. The relegated Championship side comfortably overcame League Two Port Vale to book their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup.


Gillingham 0 - 3 Luton Town

League One Luton cruised to a comfortable victory over Gillingham. Goals from Nahki Wells, Benny Benagr and Gideon Kodua saw the away side start the season by avoiding a cup upset and easing to the 2nd round of the EFL Cup.

Newcastle United confirm departure of Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe has stepped down as head coach of Newcastle United. The 48-year-old has left the club after almost five years in charge, following a disappointing 2025/2026 campaign. Author | Lewis Whatley Howe guided Newcastle to Champions League qualification on two occasions and ended the club’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the Carabao Cup in 2024/25. Newcastle said the process of appointing a new head coach is already at an advanced stage, with German coach Matthias Jaissle understood to be the leading candidate for the role.
