The Italian previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant at City before moving into8 management himself, following a similar path to Mikel Arteta, who now stands on the verge of Premier League and Champions League success with Arsenal after his own formative spell on the coaching staff at the Etihad.
Maresca would not arrive with the same glittering coaching pedigree Guardiola had built at Barcelona and Bayern Munich before taking charge at Manchester City a decade ago, and there would inevitably be an element of risk attached to his appointment.

An impossible task?
Replacing Guardiola, while attempting to mirror his extraordinary achievements, would bring immense pressure and relentless scrutiny.
In Maresca’s favour, however, is the glowing endorsement he would receive from Guardiola himself, with the Spaniard believing the Italian never received sufficient credit for his work at Chelsea.
Crucially, City’s hierarchy already possess first-hand knowledge of Maresca’s personality and coaching ability.
