David finished neatly from Adem Zorgane’s cutback just before the hour, one of the few clear chances fashioned in a match short on fluency.
Galatasaray and Union are top of their respective domestic league standings, but came into this clash with contrasting Champions League form.
A closer analysis of what happened
Both teams came close in the first half. Gabriel Sara rattled the post from distance, and Union captain Christian Burgess headed against the bar moments later.
Galatasaray struggled to find their usual sharpness without the injured Victor Osimhen, the competition’s leading scorer this season. Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane offered little influence, and Mauro Icardi had a quiet night in attack.

Sara forced a smart save from Kjell Scherpen late on, and Davinson Sanchez then fired over with the goal at his mercy. The home side’s frustration deepened when Arda Unyay collected a second yellow card for a rash challenge.
Galatasaray had been aiming for a fourth consecutive Champions League win for the first time, but they stay on nine points from five matches while Union move to six.

The home side were missing two key players
All eight of Galatasaray’s goals in the Champions League had come from two players, Victor Osimhen with six and Yunus Akgun with two, and with both sidelined through injury the hosts found it difficult to unsettle the visitors’ well organised defence.
