There was surprise before kick-off as Ella Toone was left out of the starting XI alongside striker Elisabeth Terland. With Phallon Tullis-Joyce unavailable, 20-year-old Safia Middleton-Patel made just her second senior appearance for United, her first at Old Trafford and in European competition, leaving some fans understandably nervous.
The young goalkeeper was immediately tested when Jennifer Echegini’s fierce drive struck the inside of the post inside two minutes. On the left, United’s Sandberg endured a difficult evening as Rasheedat Ajibade repeatedly stretched the defence, with PSG enjoying the majority of possession.
But in Melvine Malard, United always had a threat.
The French forward seized her moment midway through the first half, outmuscling compatriot Griedge Mbock Bathy to meet Jayde Riviere’s lofted pass before slotting a fine finish beyond Earps and into the far corner. Earps sank to her knees in frustration, powerless to prevent Malard’s precise strike.
PSG responded through Olga Carmona, who took advantage of space on the edge of the box to curl a looping effort over Middleton-Patel. Yet United found another gear after the interval. The crowd of nearly 15,000 roared them on as England international Grace Park’s quick feet set up Fridolina Rolfö to restore the lead, before Earps denied Malard a second with a sharp save at her near post.
Despite PSG’s late pressure, United looked composed and confident, going toe to toe with a side who have reached four of the last five Champions League semi-finals. Park sparkled throughout, Gabby George impressed in an unfamiliar centre-back role and Malard provided the attacking spark that made the difference.

For Earps, who endured a mixed reception on her Old Trafford return, there was a moment of mutual respect at full time as she applauded the home supporters, acknowledging both the cheers and the playful boos.
The result piles further pressure on PSG head coach Paulo Cesar, whose side remain winless in the league phase and short of their usual standards in Europe.
Skinner picks out one star player
Marc Skinner was quick to praise one of his lesser-known players after Manchester United’s Champions League win, using his post-match press conference to single out an unexpected standout performer.
Jayde Riviere may have collected the official Player of the Match award, but Skinner believed that Safia Middleton-Patel was the true star of the night. The 21-year-old stepped in for the absent Phallon Tullis-Joyce and produced a composed display under pressure.
The Wales international was making her first appearance since her club debut against Newcastle United in the League Cup last December, and her manager was clearly impressed by how she handled the occasion.
“When I found out Phallon wasn't going to start the game, I said I believed in her. I wanted Safia to be herself. She is a good footballer so she calms the build-up.
She took it in her stride. I'm honestly really proud of her.”
