The 33-year-old takes over from Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed earlier this month after less than a year at Kenilworth Road.

Wilshere steps into his first full-time managerial role with Luton currently 11th in the third tier, following consecutive relegations. He was chosen ahead of Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens and is reported to have signed a three-year contract.

Chris Powell has also joined the club as Wilshere’s assistant. The former England left-back had briefly been at Walsall as interim first-team coach, covering for Gary Waddock while he recovers from ankle surgery.

Wilshere's career in for football so far

Throughout a fourteen-year career where he played mainly for Arsenal alongside spells with Bolton, Bournemouth and Aarhus Gymnastikforening in Denmark, he won the FA Cup twice and was capped 34 times by England. He also spent time as a youngster at Luton Town.

After retiring from playing in 2022, Wilshere took charge of Arsenal's under-18 team and spent much of last season as a first-team coach at Championship club Norwich City.

He was appointed interim head coach for the Canaries' final two league games following Johannes Hoff Thorup's departure, before leaving Carrow Road at the end of the season.

Luton won promotion to the Premier League under Rob Edwards in 2023, but spent just one season in the top flight and suffered a second successive relegation last season.

Bloomfield was appointed after Edwards left Kenilworth Road in January, but the former Wycombe Wanderers manager was unable to keep Luton in the Championship, winning only 12 of his 33 games in charge.

Wilshere’s first match as Luton manager will be a home fixture against Mansfield Town on Saturday.
