Spurs had led 2-0 with six minutes remaining and looked set for an impressive victory until substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed a 94th-minute equaliser at the Bluenergy Stadium.

The game went straight to penalties, with PSG missing first through Vitinha. Micky van de Ven, who had earlier opened the scoring, saw his spot-kick saved by Lucas Chevalier, while Mathys Tel fired wide for Spurs. Nuno Mendes then converted the decisive penalty.

A closer look at what happened

Frank, taking charge of Tottenham for the first time since replacing Ange Postecoglou in May, had seen his side take control in Udine

For the opener, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, positioned just inside the PSG half, lofted a ball to the back post where Cristian Romero nodded it back into the danger area. Micky van de Ven caused further problems and, after the ball dropped to JoĂŁo Palhinha, was in the right place to turn in the rebound.

Tottenham’s second also came from a set piece, Pedro Porro’s free-kick finding Romero’s head, though Lucas Chevalier will feel he should have dealt with the effort more convincingly.

PSG, returning from their summer break just a week ago, began their fightback with Lee Kang-in’s precise 20-yard strike, before Ramos’s late intervention forced the shootout and sealed another European title for the French champions.

Positive signs for Spurs

Tottenham, who shipped 65 goals in the Premier League last season, showed far greater defensive discipline under Thomas Frank, deploying a back five out of possession to keep PSG without a shot on target for 65 minutes.

Spurs appeared in control, but PSG’s resilience told. The French champions secured their fifth win over English opposition in 2025, having already beaten Manchester City in the Champions League group stage, Liverpool in the last 16, Aston Villa in the quarter-finals and Arsenal in the semi-finals.

Tottenham supporters, some of whom plan to stage a protest on Saturday before the Premier League opener against Burnley in frustration at owner Daniel Levy and the club’s perceived inactivity in the summer transfer market, will have taken encouragement from the display in Italy, even if the result proved a disappointment.
