A US-based consortium fronted by Andrew Cavenagh, and including the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, finalised its takeover of Rangers last week.

Martin, who previously managed Southampton and Swansea City and had a brief spell as a player at Ibrox, is understood to have been the preferred candidate to take the club forward.

He achieved a promotion with Southampton in 2024 but was sacked this season after the Saints struggled for form in the Premier League.

Rangers ended last season without silverware under Philippe Clement, who was succeeded on an interim basis by Barry Ferguson.

They trailed far behind Celtic in the Premiership, lost the League Cup final to their Old Firm rivals, and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup at home by Queen’s Park. Their Europa League campaign came to an end in the quarter-finals.

A very different set up at Ibrox

Martin takes on the role of head coach rather than manager, in line with the club’s revamped football structure. Former sporting director Kevin Thelwell has returned to work alongside Dan Purdy, his former colleague at Everton, who arrives as technical director.

Martin will be supported by assistant Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen, though further additions to the backroom team have yet to be announced.

A long recruitment process

Rangers are believed to have held talks with former Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti and ex-Feyenoord head coach Brian Priske. Steven Gerrard, who previously managed the club, and former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli were also among the names linked with the role.
