Italy | Napoli win Serie a

With Inter Milan beating Como 2–0, Napoli needed three points to be sure of finishing top. The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona buzzed with anticipation as home supporters created a carnival-like atmosphere in the Naples sun.

Napoli, dominant from the off, found their breakthrough through McTominay, who arrived from Manchester United in a £25.7 million move last August. The Scotland midfielder timed his run perfectly to meet Matteo Politano’s right-wing cross, delivering a spectacular acrobatic finish that lifted the roof.

Victory would see Napoli crowned champions for the second time in three seasons, and the title was secured when Romelu Lukaku powered through Michel Adopo’s challenge and slotted calmly past Alen Sherri to make it 2–0. The goal triggered jubilant celebrations, with substitutes and coaches pouring onto the pitch and Lukaku earning a booking for removing his shirt.

The remainder of the match played out in a party atmosphere as fans revelled in the club’s latest triumph, adding to the titles won in 1986–87, 1989–90 and 2022–23.

Conte triumphs in Italy again

Antonio Conte has now won the Serie A title with three different sides after three Scudettos in charge of Juventus and another at Inter. He clearly knows his way around this league.

He had to watch from the stands as he served a suspension after being sent off against Parma but was quickly out with his team at the final whistle and was later thrown in the air by his jubilant players.

The Scottish connection

McTominay and fellow Scotland international Billy Gilmour both started for Napoli, who nearly took a fifth-minute lead only for Giacomo Raspadori's strike across goal to go just wide.

The former Man United midfielder settled nerves in the home stands with his stunning goal, with a host of fireworks and flares let off by the home fans, with clouds of smoke drifting over the pitch for the rest of the first half.

McTominay and Gilmour are now the first Scotland internationals to win the Serie A title in 120 years, dating back to 1905 when Jack Diment and James Squair helped win Juventus's first ever top-flight title.
