Mael De Gevigney was given a red in just the third minute after a coming-together with Keshi Anderson. This would prove to be an almost pivotal moment.

Former Fulham player Jay Stansfield fired Blues ahead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute after Keshi Anderson was taken out by Kieren Flavell.

Birmingham v Barnsley

Despite having one less player, Davis Keillor-Dunn headed Barnsley level in the 35th minute after a near-post cross was headed back across the box.

A quickfire brace from May at the start of the second half had Blues 3-1 up by the 55th minute. Surely, there wasn't going to be more drama.

Barnsley still tried to make a game of it

They pulled one back through Stephen Humphrys, whose effort at the near post snuck past Allsop. They couldn't get back into the game could they?

The answer was no, they couldn't. The Blues extended their lead again when Luke Harris converted with a powerful strike in the 72nd minute after driving down the right, before Kieran Dowell added a fifth in the 82nd minute.

Any lingering doubt was removed when Lukas Jutkiewicz added a sixth in the 89th minute after capitalising on a loose ball from his earlier effort.

Paul, a huge Birmingham City fan, said: "One of those matches that you never wanted to end. A glorious sunny day and a fantastic performance from us. Who would have thought that we would be on the verge of promotion?"

This was a view supported by Darren, who added: "We went into this season with so many clubs in League One warning us that we were going to be in for a shock. However, we've dealt with this comfortably and are now on the verge of something special."
