Across Europe - La Liga ~ Barca v Girona

Ladislav Krejci's own goal had given Barcelona a deserved lead in the first half against their Catalan rivals. Girona, however, threatened to pull off an upset when Arnaut Danjuma equalized early in the second half against the run of play.

Nevertheless, Poland forward Lewandowski put Barcelona back in front just after the hour mark with an improvised finish. He then scored his 25th league goal of the season following some excellent midfield play from substitute Frenkie de Jong. Ferran Torres rounded off the scoring late on with a low effort into the bottom corner.

This was the perfect response from Barcelona, who watched their great foes Real Madrid fight back to beat Leganes and move level on points at the summit of the Spanish top flight on Saturday. They have now won their past nine matches in La Liga and will head into Wednesday's second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final with Atletico Madrid (finely balanced at 4-4) full of confidence.

They also look to be something of an attacking powerhouse again. The side played with a flair that we haven't seen from them in several years. Are we reaching the conclusion of what could be a truly memorable campaign for the club?

Some of the best reaction

As always, hundreds of thousands of people from outside Barcelona watched the match on TV and many would have been amazed by some of the football on display from the home side.

Liam C watched the match as a neutral. He was impressed with what he saw from this Barca side, saying: "I've learned something about Hansi Flick's team that should worry the rest of Europe. Barcelona's success doesn't solely rely on the players on the field."

He went onto say: "The mentality and tactics are so deeply embedded in the fabric of the team that anyone can step in and perform effectively. Not only is this team achieving victories, but they're also dominating their opponents."

Jamie P thinks Barca's experienced players are going to be key to their success. He said: "It's still the experienced players showing how itā€™s done. Frankie de jong is a level above everyone else in their midfield and Lewandowski up top is still world class. I am not sure how they will replace the former Bayern striker if he leaves in the summer."
