Manchester United plan to build a new stadium
Some reaction to Manchester United’s proposed new stadium
They have announced plans to build the biggest stadium in the country.
This will be an iconic new £2bn 100,000-seater ground close to their current stadium. Once construction is complete, the "current" Old Trafford is likely to be demolished.
United's decision follows a thorough consultation on whether to renovate Old Trafford or construct a brand-new stadium.
Old Trafford has been Manchester United's home since 1910, and the club would remain there until any new stadium is completed.
The stadium will form part of a wider regeneration of the Old Trafford area, predicted to be the biggest such project in the United Kingdom since the transformation of the Stratford area that accompanied the 2012 Olympics in London. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has already given government backing to the plans.
Jim Ratcliffe said the following in a statement that was published on the Manchester United website: “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.
“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home."
Some fans have seen the positives but others are concerned about the negative impact on ticket prices and fan culture at Manchester United. Visit Manchester Super News for some reaction to this.
