Celtic now face a daunting play-off clash against Bayern Munich.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Watkins, who won a second-half penalty but slipped at the crucial moment, sending his effort high and wide.
Villa have no plans to part ways with the 29-year-old forward, especially now that Unai Emery’s side have secured qualification for the knockout stages, finishing eighth in the table.
Celtic, who placed 21st, have a huge task ahead if they are to reach the last 16. Their defensive frailties were exposed early at Villa Park, as they found themselves 2-0 down within the opening five minutes.
Rogers' early double gave the hosts a commanding lead, but Adam Idah hit back with two quick goals of his own to level the match before the break.
Watkins had a chance to put Villa 3-0 up before Celtic’s resurgence, but Alistair Johnston cleared his effort off the line. Moments later, Idah capitalised on Reo Hatate’s pass to stun Villa Park with an equaliser.
After the restart, Villa regained control, with Watkins restoring their lead on the hour mark before his wayward penalty four minutes later. Rogers then sealed his hat-trick in stoppage time, punishing another defensive lapse from Celtic.
