Marcus Rashford, a product of Manchester United’s academy, has racked up over 400 appearances for his boyhood club, finding the net 138 times. During his time at Old Trafford, he has helped United lift the Europa League, two FA Cups, and two League Cups.

A versatile attacker capable of playing across the front line, Rashford has also made his mark on the international stage. He has scored 17 goals for England and featured in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Posting on his Instagram, Rashford said: "I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen. I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me but Aston Villa was an easy decision - I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager's ambitions. I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season."

Villa looking to improve their squad

On Saturday, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery admitted the club “need new players” after their disappointing 2-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Wolves.

Villa have already strengthened their squad this January, bringing in Spanish full-back Andrés García from Levante and Dutch forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund. However, they also sold Colombian striker Jhon Durán to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in a £71m deal, while centre-back Diego Carlos moved to Fenerbahçe for around £8.45m.

Their squad depth has been tested further, with England striker Ollie Watkins forced off injured at the weekend. Meanwhile, injuries to Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings have left Villa so short at the back that central midfielder Boubacar Kamara has had to fill in at centre-half.

On Monday, the club confirmed that 19-year-old defender Kosta Nedeljković has joined RB Leipzig on loan for the rest of the season. The Serbian youngster has struggled for game time since arriving from Red Star Belgrade in January 2024, making just two starts for Villa.

Marcus impressed by Villa ambition

Speaking in his first interview with the Aston Villa website, he said: “It’s an ambitious time for this club and a great opportunity for me to join the team and help them keep pushing forward. I’m excited, can’t wait for the first training session and obviously the first game.

“(Unai Emery is) a top manager and what he’s done at the club since he’s come to Villa is unbelievable. It’s the constant ambition that’s attractive, and it’s why you want to join such a club. You want to keep improving year on year, and that’s what the team has been doing and are doing this year."
