Windass picked up the ball in his own defensive third and unleashed a stunning strike from over 60 yards, sailing it perfectly over Derby’s goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.

Barry Bannan, Djeidi Gassama, and Anthony Musaba also got on the scoresheet for the Owls, while Jerry Yates and Ebou Adams managed consolation goals for the Rams.

A closer look at what happened as Wednesday move up the table

The breakthrough came after lively wing-back Gassama exposed the lack of pace in Derby defender Sonny Bradley, delivering a low cross that left Bannan with a simple finish.

Derby initially struggled but began to find their rhythm. Efforts from Kane Wilson and Nat Phillips forced good saves from Wednesday keeper Jack Beadle, while Yates hit the post just before half-time from Kenzo Goudmijn’s excellent delivery.

Owls boss Danny Röhl made two changes at the break, introducing Windass and 19-year-old defender Gabriel Otegbayo. Just after the hour mark, Windass stole the spotlight with what will surely be remembered as one of the greatest goals in Championship history. There's certainly been no better than that this season.

Spotting Widell Zetterström slightly off his line, Windass took a touch and lofted the ball expertly over the goalkeeper’s head, leaving the crowd in awe.

Not long after, Gassama added to his impressive performance, latching onto Svante Ingelsson’s clever headed pass before driving his shot into the bottom corner.

Yates pulled one back for Derby, poking in their first goal of the afternoon, but Musaba restored Wednesday’s dominance with a rebound from his own effort to make it 4-1.

In stoppage time, Adams curled a superb shot into the top corner, but it was too little, too late for Derby.

The win moves Sheffield Wednesday within three points of the play-off spots, while Derby remain precariously positioned just four points above the relegation zone.
