Doncaster beat Hull on penalties
Hull City 1 - 1 Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster Rovers won 5-4 on penalties
A closer look at what happened
Hull City’s miserable FA Cup run continued for a fifth consecutive year as they suffered an almost humiliating exit at the hands of former manager Grant McCann. McCann, who also eliminated Hull from a cup competition last season, guided Doncaster Rovers to a dramatic victory at the MKM Stadium, winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Doncaster took the lead early in the second half when Luke Molyneux capitalised on Ryan Giles’ error, stealing possession before calmly slotting past debutant goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The lacklustre hosts struggled to respond, showing little urgency or creativity, until Mason Burstow struck the post and Gustavo Puerta converted the rebound to level the score.
With no winner after extra time, the tie went to penalties in the bitterly cold East Yorkshire night. Rushworth gave Hull a strong start by saving the first penalty, but the momentum shifted when Burstow missed his spot-kick with the chance to win it. In sudden death, Alfie Jones saw his effort saved, and Harry Clifton stepped up to secure the victory for Doncaster. It was yet another early cup exit for Hull, with no sign of FA Cup joy once again.
Manager Liam Rosenior made five changes to the side that staged a thrilling 3-3 comeback against Leeds United last Saturday. Carl Rushworth made his debut in goal, while Cody Drameh, Ryan Giles, Fin Burns, Gustavo Puerta, and Harry Vaughan – starting for the first time this season – were also brought into the team. Despite the strong line-up, Hull’s performance fell short on the night.
