Ipswich Town: Back in the big league

How's life been for Ipswich Town since their return to the Premier League?

After earning promotion under manager Kieran McKenna, expectations were cautiously optimistic; the Tractor Boys aimed to retain their top-flight status and solidify their position among England's elite.

Closer look at their match v Spurs.

They put in a brilliant display to claim their first Premier League win of the season with a 2-1 victory.

Goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap in the first half set Town on course, and they held their ground admirably in the second half to secure three valuable points, showing strength in both attack and defence.

Axel Tuanzebe’s return from a thumb injury provided a welcome boost, as he took his place on the right of a backline that included Dara O’Shea, Cameron Burgess, and Leif Davis, with Aro Muric between the posts.

Captain Sam Morsy anchored the midfield alongside Jens Cajuste, with Ben Johnson operating on the right. Omari Hutchinson and Szmodics provided support for Delap up front.

Premier League: 2024/2025 season

Wearing their pink third kit for the first time this season, they started energetically. Szmodics found space inside the box and managed a shot, which deflected wide for a corner. Davis sent in the corner, and O’Shea connected well, though his header took a deflection and went behind for a goal kick.

Spurs responded, with Brennan Johnson meeting a cross at the near post but turning it just wide, as the home side enjoyed a spell of pressure. However, Ipswich remained a threat on the break.

Cajuste then powered into the box, winning a corner that Burgess met superbly at the back post, his effort narrowly hitting the crossbar. The match finished 2-1, giving Ipswich a memorable win and their fans a fantastic away day.

What happened before that?

There was heartbreak against Leicester City. A late goal from Jordan Ayew cancelled a strike from Leif Davis’ as the match finished 1-1. Before that, there was similar late heartbreak against Bournemouth. A 4-3 defeat must have had Town fans thinking they were cursed.

Going further back to September, there was a credible draw against Champions League side Aston Villa. Two goals from Liam Delap secured this point. They also managed a 0-0 draw away at Brighton. Again, perhaps proving that this side has something about them that could keep them in the Premier League.

In addition to that, very few of their fans will forget that equaliser against Southamppton.

Will they stay up though?

If Ipswich can secure points against fellow relegation candidates, they have a decent chance of staying up. If they can strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, that should give improve their chances.
