Robin van Persie's stoppage-time header completed a memorable hat-trick and helped Manchester United secure a victory over Southampton in an intense match. 

Rickie Lambert scored a header to put Southampton in the lead, but Van Persie equalised with a classy volley. Southampton regained the lead with a header from Morgan Schneiderlin, and then Van Persie missed a dinked penalty, which was well saved by Kelvin Davis.

Van Persie would be a crucial part of United's campaign that resulted in a 20th league title. In this match, he helped United surge forward. The Netherlands striker seemed to have salvaged a point when he poked home a rebound. 

However, the former Arsenal captain wasn’t content with just that—he sealed all three points with a brilliant near-post header, securing a win for Sir Alex Ferguson in what was his 1,000th league match in charge of United.

For Saints, it was a gutting end to what had been a fantastic game, in which they had played their part fully.
