A closer look at what happened in Manchester

Arsenal had produced a superb defensive display after Leandro Trossard was sent off in the first half and were just moments away from what would have been a defining moment in Mikel Arteta's tenure. However, substitute Stones found the net after a well-executed short corner during the seventh minute of added time.

Arsenal will feel both pride and heartache. They had initially fallen behind to Erling Haaland’s 100th goal for City but turned the game on its head, taking the lead before the break.

In a series of crucial moments, City lost key player Rodri to a knee injury after 21 minutes, adding to Pep Guardiola’s frustrations as Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori fired a high, angled shot past Ederson just seconds later.

Arsenal's set-piece strength shone once again when Gabriel, replicating his winner against Tottenham the previous week, headed in at the far post from a corner in first-half stoppage time.

The most controversial moment came just before the break when Arsenal’s Trossard received a second yellow card for time-wasting after kicking the ball away. The decision left the visitors feeling hard done by, especially after City’s Jeremy Doku escaped punishment for a similar incident.

City piled on the pressure in the second half, but Arsenal defended with bravery, resilience, and discipline, helped by the brilliant performance of goalkeeper David Raya. They came agonisingly close to securing City’s first home Premier League defeat since Brentford’s win in November 2022, only to be denied by Stones' last-gasp intervention. That late goal keeps City at the top of the Premier League.
