Scotland: Celtic keep up perfect start

Celtic 2 - 0 Hearts

Celtic maintained their perfect start to the season as both sides faced contrasting outcomes with VAR for the champions and Hearts.

Early in the match, the visitors were initially awarded a penalty in the first half after Lawrence Shankland's header struck Liam Scales' arm. However, the decision was overturned after a VAR review.

In the second half, a cross from Nicolas Kuhn made contact with James Penrice's hand, leading to another VAR review. This time, the result was a penalty, and record signing Arne Engels scored his first goal for Celtic from the spot.

To seal the victory, Luke McCowan also scored his first goal for Celtic with a late strike.

What about Hearts?

Hearts find themselves one point behind at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership. This was an improved performance from the visitors, but the match ultimately ended in a seventh straight defeat in all competitions.

Referee Colin Steven had been quick to point to the spot after the Scales incident but a prolonged VAR check ended with Celtic restarting on a dropped ball.

Neither Steven nor his assistant initially penalised Penrice, whose hand was outstretched, and it was more disappointment for Hearts as VAR ruled in the favour of Celtic.

Engels, signed from Augsburg for a reported £11m, was given the responsibility rather than Reo Hatate and the new Belgium cap, 21, showed no signs of nerves as he rolled the ball past Craig Gordon.

Hearts' best chance came from the edge of the penalty area. Musa Drammeh stretched out a foot to meet fellow substitute Blair Spittal's low cross but Kasper Schmeichel managed to save well from close range.

And the clean sheet meant Celtic recorded five wins without conceding at the start of a season for the first time since 1906 - only the second time in their history.

Missed chances for Celtic but they got the job done

Kyogo Furuhashi had a golden opportunity when he was played through on goal, but his shot went wide. Shortly after, Hatate's deflected strike was comfortably dealt with by the experienced goalkeeper, Craig Gordon.

Alistair Johnston took a quick throw-in, which was flicked on by Kuhn, allowing Engels to control and take a shot. However, the Belgian's effort struck Gordon's left-hand post.

Gordon then made a brilliant save to deny Kyogo, with Kuhn's follow-up effort dramatically cleared off the line by Penrice.

A converted penalty gave Celtic the lead they required, allowing manager Brendan Rodgers to rest Kyogo, Hatate, and Engels in the second half, with an eye on their upcoming match on Wednesday.

McCowan was one of the players to come on, and his shot managed to beat Gordon, deflecting in off the post despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

In added time, Adam Idah thought he had scored his first goal of the season, connecting with a Greg Taylor cross. However, an earlier offside decision against Luis Palma meant the score remained 2-0.
