Transfer News: Villa sign Onana

Aston Villa have secured the signing of midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a £50m deal.

The 22-year-old played every minute of Belgium's Euro 2024 campaign and now has the chance to showcase his talent for Villa in the upcoming Champions League season.

Onana joined Everton from Lille for £33m in 2022 and made 72 appearances for the Toffees, netting four goals.

He was linked with a move to Arsenal in 2023, and several top clubs were reportedly interested in him this summer.

You can see how they announced the transfer in the video below. The footage is from the Aston Villa YouTube account.

Villa manager Unai Emery had been searching for a new defensive midfielder after the club sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35m in June.

After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, Villa are bolstering their squad for the challenges of the Champions League in the coming campaign.

They have not competed at this elite level since the 1982-83 season, this was right after winning the competition during that decade.

Onana's arrival has pushed Villa's summer spending to around £140m.

Other signings include £35m for Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, £18.6m for the double signing of Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus, £18m for Jaden Philogene’s return from Hull, £5m for Ross Barkley's move from Luton, and £9m for Lewis Dobbin's transfer from Everton.

Villa will kick off their Premier League season at West Ham on Saturday 17 August. Their fans would have have been wondering how they could compete in multiple competitions. However, these signings might be starting to show how prepared they are.

Reaction

Peter, a Villa fan, told us: "It might be unpopular based on comments across social media, but I think we are having a great transfer window.  Barkley and Philogene are shrewd signings at good prices, and they've now got a more defensive replacement for Luiz. I am excited about the new season."

This was how the player himself responded.

Jamie, another Villa fan, added: "We are having a fantastic transfer window and are fully prepared for this new campaign. Onana is a player with fantastic potential and is the perfect type of signing for us."
