Transfer News: Celtic sign Kasper Schmeichel

The Scottish champions have replaced former keeper Joe Hart

Celtic have signed Denmark captain Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year deal after the goalkeeper led his country to the last 16 at Euro 24.

Schmeichel, 37, was a free agent after leaving the Belgian club Anderlecht at the end of last season and replaces former Manchester City club-mate Joe Hart, who has now retired.

The Dane has earned 105 international caps and will join his new teammates in the United States, where the Scottish champions are on tour.

Schmeichel is best known for his 11-year stint with Leicester City, during which the club won an improbable Premier League crown in 2016.

He would later work with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at King Power Stadium, where the pair claimed the 2021 FA Cup and subsequent FA Community Shield.

After leaving Leicester, he played a season at Nice before moving to Belgium in the summer of 2023. He made 33 appearances for Anderlecht, keeping eight clean sheets.

You can watch his interview with Celtic TV in the video below. The footage is from @CelticFC.

Sean, a Celtic fan from Dunfermline, said: "This is a great signing for us. It brings us some time. Even if Kasper Schmeichel only stays for a season, he will bring some experience."

This was a view supported by Patrick from Glasgow. He added: "We are making smart short-term decisions in the transfer market. I hope that this is eventually followed by some longer-term decisions that allow us to start performing better in the Champions League."

Paul, another Celtic fan, added: "I thought Joe Hart leaving would be a big loss for us. However, this is a great replacement for us. He will bring some experience to the side. I am hoping that he will help us improve in the Champions League."
