Transfer News: Manchester United secure their first signing of the summer

Could this prove to be a bargain for Manchester United?

The Red Devils have secured the signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and the Netherlands for £36.54 million.

The 23-year-old striker has committed to a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with the possibility of extending for an additional year.

While Zirkzee's contract with Bologna had a release clause of €40 million (£33.6 million), United chose to pay a slightly higher amount to spread the payment over three years, aiding compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Zirkzee is the first player to join the men's team since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7% stake in the club last December.

Last season, he scored 12 goals in 37 matches, helping Bologna secure an unexpected spot in this season's Champions League.

Zirkzee started his career at Feyenoord before moving to Bayern Munich in 2017. He transferred to Bologna for around £7.15 million five years later, following loan spells at Parma and Anderlecht.

He was elected by Ronald Koeman for the Euro 2024 squad and made two substitute appearances for the Netherlands, who were defeated by England in the semi-finals.

Recently named the 2023/24 Serie A Under-23 Player of the Year, Zirkzee's profile aligns well with United's needs, especially given his age.

United manager Erik ten Hag has seen his forward options reduced after Anthony Martial's departure in June upon the expiration of his contract.

Rasmus Hojlund, a £72 million signing from Atalanta in 2023, scored 16 goals in 43 appearances in his first season at the club.

The best reaction

The man himself made a passionate post on his Instagram page. He said: "I can’t really find the words to explain how much you all mean to me. The stadium, the city, this team, but especially the people who will always have a special place in my heart. I hope that for all the support and trust that you gave me, I have given something back in return. Bologna is finally where it belongs and I will support and cheer for you from a distance!"

The Manchester United account then posted this video of their new forward greeting his new manager. He looks delighted to be at his new club and fans will be hoping that he will be a success at his new club. One Instagram user commented: "This is a great signing for the club. I can't wait for the Community Shield and Premier League now."
